Seattle Mariners vs. Cincinnati Reds
The Mariners will face the Reds on an Interleague matchup on Saturday. Felix Hernandez will take the mound for Seattle and he has been hit or miss this season and shown definitive cracks in his armor despite years of dominance as one of the top pitchers in MLB. Felix has a 4.42 ERA in his last three starts overall and on the road it is a 3.68 ERA for him allowing 15 runs on 22 hits along with 3 home runs and 13 walks to 15 strikeouts in 22 innings pitched on the road this season.

Those aren’t horrendous numbers for Felix Hernandez away from Seattle but they aren’t all that good either and the fact he has been troubled by home runs isn’t exactly a good fit for Great American Ballpark here in Cincinnati. On the flip side, John Lamb will make the start for Cincinnati and the Reds lefty has been battling a thumb injury which hindered his performance against Cleveland in his last start. He couldn’t throw his curveball or change-up in Monday's start against the Indians, limiting him to a straight fastball and cutter. Lamb insisted after the start the thumb wasn’t the cause of those issues but my guess is it did at least to some extent.

Lamb was belted for 7 runs on 10 hits in 4 innings of work in that last outing against the Indians and will be in tough here against a red hot Seattle lineup that has piled up 49 runs in their last 9 games combined going 6-2-1 to the Over in those games. Lamb has not pitched more than 6 innings in any of his three starts and lasted just 4 innings in his last two starts and that means the horrific Cincinnati bullpen (still ranked dead last in MLB in ERA) is likely going to play a major factor in the latter stages of this game and open the door for plenty of late runs to be scored by Seattle.

I understand that King Felix is the primary reason why this total is sitting as low as it is in this game at 8 but no Reds game has any business bring totaled that low these days with their capable offense and suspect starting pitching along with their woeful bullpen regardless of who takes the mound for the opposition. I’ll look to bet this game Over the total offered by the MLB odds, at a bargain rate.

Texas Rangers vs. Houston Astros
Cesar Ramos is not much more than a spot starter for the Texas Rangers who is capable of throwing 5 or 6 innings max and that is about it. He is a journeyman who has been with three teams prior to Texas since 2009 and he has been very mediocre in two starts since joining the rotation on a spot start basis allowing a whopping 16 hits in 10.1 innings of work over a pair of starts against Toronto and the NY Yankees while also giving up 2 home runs.

The Texas bullpen has been a major problem for the Rangers this season so with Ramos not a likely candidate to pitch deep into the game, it should allow for Houston ot possibly so some late damage offensively against the suspect Rangers pen in the latter innings. On the flip side, Mike Fiers has seen a drop and decline in his performance so far this season as his swinging strike rate and strikeouts per 9 innings are both down from last season and the % of medium and hard hit balls against him have gone up.

He is giving up stronger contact while also not getting as many swings and misses and the result has been a tough start to the season as he enters this game with a 4.63 ERA including a 4.40 ERA here at Minute Maid Park while surrendering 5 home runs in 28.2 innings pitched here in Houston. I see definite Over the total potential here on Saturday night and that is the way I will play it as my MLB pick.
