The St. Louis might be battling for a wild-card spot. Today they take on the Brewers in what should be a decent pitcher's duel. Are the MLB Odds have the total of this game set too high?

MLB odds have set the total for this game between St. Louis and Milwaukee at 8.5 like at Pinnacle Sports -105. For my MLB pick today I'm going to back under the total because starters Michael Wacha for the Cards and Jimmy Nelson for the Brewers have the ability to shut teams down.

St. Louis Cardinals
Michael Wacha takes the mound for St. Louis and comes in with a 4.38 ERA and 1.41 whip recently starting against this same Milwaukee team where he allowed two earned runs in five innings.  Wacha is much better than his numbers indicate having gotten knocked around just a few times which have inflated his numbers a touch. His numbers are actually a little bit better on the road and he should come into this game with some confidence having allowed just those two earned runs against Milwaukee just a few days ago. However, they did garner nine hits off him in his short stint on the mound but he has the ability to keep the hits and runs to a minimum against this Brewers team that strikes out a lot. As well, St. Louis boasts one of the best bullpens in the National League. At the plate St. Louis has been solid this year ranking third in the major leagues in runs scored per game and fifth in OPS. They have been as consistent as any team in baseball offensively but they face a starting pitcher today in Nelson who has been particularly good at home.

Milwaukee Brewers
Jimmy Nelson gets the start and comes in with a 3.65 ERA and 1.37 whip while allowing three earned runs against this same St. Louis team a few days ago. Nelson is probably one of the most underrated pitchers in the National League and he has the capability to be really lights out at times. In his most recent start against the Cardinals, he picked up a loss allowing three earned runs off of eight hits in six innings in St. Louis. Now he gets the opportunity at home for a good bounce back game in a place that he has pitched really well this season. So far he holds a 2.40 ERA at home while allowing batters to hit just .225 against him. Although he has not pitched particularly well against St. Louis over the last few seasons he should be able to limit the damage pitching in his home park. At the plate, Milwaukee is one of the worst offensive teams in baseball ranking in the bottom part of the league in most categories. Currently, they rank 26th in runs scored per game along with ranking 22nd in batting average and OPS. They also rank dead last in the major leagues in at-bats per game and strikeouts, don't look for them to score at will today.
