Looking to gain an edge with your MLB picks? Let's look over the various team and player props that are posted and see which options stand out above the rest.
New York Yankees Team Total OVER 4 (-115)
The Yankees begin a weekend series with Mike Trout and the Angels tonight, and right now they're favored at -115 MLB odds to secure a victory in the opener. Meanwhile, we see a total of 8.5 runs posted.
Nathan Eovaldi will start for New York, but it's Jered Weaver that we'll be picking on in this situation. Weaver has notoriously struggled at Yankee Stadium and this is about as bad of a matchup as he's going to face, with that notorious short right field porch there for the taking for the Yankees bats. The likes of Mark Teixeira, Brian McCann and even Brett Gardner have to be licking their chops in preparation for this evening.
Weaver has actually been pretty serviceable this season, but we don't like his chances in this spot. We look for New York to hit at least a couple home runs here, so we're going to feel good about adding the OVER when it comes to the home team's total. We don't mind taking on a little more chalk in order to secure that option at 5Dimes.
Mike Trout vs. Mark Teixeira Total Bases: Back Teixeira (+105)
Whenever you see Trout listed in props, you know he's going to be getting a ton of love from the public, and that's most definitely the case again tonight. After all, who wouldn't want to back the best player in baseball?
Thing is, we like Teixeira's matchup a lot more tonight, so our second pick will come in that same New York/Los Angeles matchup. We're going to pick on Weaver, and Teixeira has hit two home runs off the right-hander in the past, so he knows what it takes to have success against the veteran. A switch-hitter, Teixeira is able to work the splits in his favor, whereas Trout will find himself in a less ideal R/R matchup here on the road against Eovaldi.
We all know how great Trout is, but Teixeira is sneakily having a solid season himself. His batting average (.241) leaves a lot to be desired, but he's hit 16 home runs to go with 41 RBI, and he's already hit 10 doubles as well. Meanwhile, Trout has 14 homers, 11 doubles and 31 RBI to his name. We're going to ignore face value and back the Yankees' first baseman to collect more bases tonight.
San Francisco Giants Team Total OVER 4 (-120)
Our last pick comes in the City of Brotherly Love, where the Phillies will play host to the Giants in the series opener tonight. We have Jerome Williams scheduled to toe the rubber for Philadelphia, while Tim Lincecum will be handed the ball on the other side. Not exactly the two most trustworthy pitchers, right?
We're going to target Williams in this situation, however, as he's capable of remarkable blowups each and every time he takes the mound. He owns a 5.49 ERA, and his 4.55 SIERA isn't much better, so it's not like he's simply getting unlucky. Williams hasn't been a reliable pitcher for quite some time now, and San Francisco has more than enough pop (and discipline at the plate) to give him fits.
That's what we expect to see this evening. Even with Hunter Pence out of the lineup, the Giants should be able to string hits together and inflict damage. Look for catcher Buster Posey to contribute in some way or another, as he's hit seven of his eight home runs off of right-handed pitchers so far in 2015. Back the Giants to go over four runs with your MLB picks against the gas can known as Jerome Williams.
