A perfect 4-0 vs. the Twins in his career, Masahiro Tanaka is a big favorite on the MLB odds Monday on ESPN when the Yankees begin a 4-game series with Minnesota.

Maybe spring forgot to move its clocks forward last month and that’s why the 2018 MLB season had to endure so much nasty weather early on the fixture. Whatever the case, thermometers are starting to rise as the campaign heads into Week 4, and ESPN is taking us to the Bronx on Monday to get things rolling with the first of a 4-game series between the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins.

The series closes out a 10-game homestand for the Yanks, and they’ll send Masahiro Tanaka (2-2, 6.45) to the mound for the 7:05 PM (ET) first pitch. New York has won four of the first six contests, and Bookmaker has the Bronx Bombers -205 chalk for this one. Minnesota, meanwhile, was swept at Tampa Bay over the weekend to begin a road trip, and the Twins counter with Jake Odorizzi (1-1, 3.38), a 9-run total priced higher on the ‘under.’

Twins Have Never Beaten Tanaka

Paul Molitor’s rotation didn’t line up for Odorizzi to pitch against his former mates down in St. Petersburg, the Rays still the only American League team he hasn’t faced in his 6+ year career. Considering his track record at Yankee Stadium, Odorizzi probably wishes he’d pitched against the Rays instead of leading off this series. The 28-year-old is 2-3 in six career starts on this mound, pitching to a 6.27 ERA in those 33 innings. The only good news is he did earn the only save of his career at this park back in 2013.

Tanaka’s last two starts have been ugly, though he did have enough offense behind him to win the one in Boston nearly two weeks ago. That wasn’t the case last Tuesday against the Marlins, however, when Miami chased him after five having scored seven runs to pull off a 9-1 upset as a +260 underdog on the MLB odds. Facing the Twins, a team he has beaten four times in as many tries with a 2.48 ERA, might help Tanaka get back on track.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

New York has dominated Minnesota over the last decade, winning 50 of the 71 regular-season meetings since the start of the ’08 season and adding a perfect 7-0 postseason record during that span. The Yankees took 4 of 6 last year to win their 11th straight season series from the Twins, sweeping the series in the Bronx where the ‘under’ paid off twice in the 3-game set.

Look for temps in the low-to-mid 50s this evening in the Big Apple, clear skies overhead and a light SE breeze blowing in from right field. My free baseball pick will piggyback New York’s and Tanaka’s dominance over Minnesota with a run-line play on the pinstripe posse.
