Two solid left-handers take the mound when Tampa Bay visits Boston for one of the earlier MLB matchups on Saturday. Oddsmakers have set the total quite low for an American League game so is there any value in backing the over or siding with the pitchers to have quality starts?

Tampa Bay Rays

Blake Snell takes the mound for Tampa Bay and comes in with a 3.96 ERA and 1.62 whip. Despite his high whip I really like this young pitcher and believe he should come in and bounce back from a pretty bad outing versus Kansas City where he allowed four earned runs off of 10 hits in five innings. Earlier this season at Fenway he was stellar allowing just one earned run in five innings, but Boston did get seven hits off of him.

His overall numbers against Boston are not great in his two years of major-league experience but he should be able to come in and do enough to keep Boston to a reasonable number. Tampa Bay has been surprisingly decent this year ranking in the middle the league in most offensive categories and surprisingly rank first in plate appearances. However, most of their statistics drop versus left-handers like hitting just .225 on the season against them, and they’re facing one of the best ones in the game today. Don’t look for the Rays to light up the scoreboard.

Boston Red Sox

Chris Sale gets the start for Boston and has been awesome this year with a 1.92 ERA and 0.79 whip. Like Snell, he is coming off his worst outing of the year, but it really wasn’t all that bad allowing four earned runs in six innings with only four hits. He has been arguably the best pitcher in baseball so far this season and it’s kind of hard not to believe he can’t come in and absolutely dominate this game. The Red Sox have gotten everything they’ve wanted in acquiring him in the off-season and I like for him to come in and have another stellar performance in this early matchup.

Boston remains one of the better hitting teams in baseball hitting .277 which ranks second in the major leagues. However, despite their high batting average, it hasn’t translated into a lot of run production as Boston sits at just averaging 4.50 runs per game which ranks them 19th in all of baseball. I don’t expect them to struggle very much at the plate today, but like Tampa Bay, I also don’t expect them to light up the scoreboard.

Oddsmakers have come out with a really low total for an American League game at 7.5 but for my MLB pick, I will back the under. I like Snell to come in and limit some damage and Sale should be his brilliant self. Look for the pitchers to dominate the day.
