With the Pirates barely still fighting for that spot on the postseason, they are facing a tough pitcher in today's matchup as they host the Reds. We take a look into the MLB odds and provide you with an expert pick.

Cincinnati Reds vs Pittsburgh Pirates

Cincinnati Reds
Dan Straily gets the start for the Reds and comes in with a 3.83 ERA and 1.18 whip but a 4.96 ERA on the road this season. In his last six starts he has been decent allowing 16 runs in about 38 innings of work and he has had only really one bad outing in that stretch of games.  Against the Angels two starts ago he got lit up for seven earned runs in just two innings of work allowing four home runs as well. Outside of that he has not allowed more than two runs in any of his other starts in that time span and is coming off a solid outing at home allowing just one earned run off of three hits against the Cards in about six innings of work. Also, despite his struggles on the road this season the Reds play well behind him and have won 10 out of the last 12 times he has started on the mound.

At the plate, the Reds remain subpar statistically across the board but they had a bit of success against Nova the one time they faced him this season and they are coming off a game in which they simply couldn't get much run production although they garnered 13 hits versus the Mets. With Straily being a quality starter this is good plus money value on him also considering he has a 2.57 ERA versus Pittsburgh this season in four appearances.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Ivan Nova takes the mound for Pittsburgh with a 4.34 ERA and 1.25 whip but the Pirates have won five out of his six starts on the hill. The one loss out of the games would be his last start which was against Milwaukee at home where he still pitched well allowing just two earned runs in six innings. For the most part, he has rejuvenated himself in Pittsburgh coming over from the Yankees and has really only had one bad outing and one subpar one in his first start as a Pirate. That first start was against this same Reds team that garnered three runs off of six hits in seven innings as well as two home runs. Although he has pitched well so far I doubt he will get out this game unscathed against a decent Reds offense the is seeing him for the second time.

One of the main facets why the Pirates have been losing at an alarming rate recently, although winning yesterday, has been due to their inconsistency at the plate. I don't expect them to have a magical transformation to end the season and it just seems they are not going to make it. Over their last eight games, they have been shut out three times.

MLB odds
Oddsmakers have Cincinnati as a pretty big underdog in this spot at +142 or more across the board. For my MLB pick, I will back them today on the plus money line. Although it seems like the Pirates might be coming out of their funk this is great value on a quality pitcher to hand them another loss.
