Nationals and Padres at Petco Park on Friday
The San Diego Padres will host the Washington Nationals on Friday at 10:10 PM ET. According to the MLB odds, Washington is a -120 money line favorite, and the posted total is 7.0. Friday will be the second of a four game series between these clubs, and San Diego won the opener last night 8-3.
Jordan Zimmerman will get the start tonight for Washington. Zimmerman has been in stellar form during his last three starts with a 3.15 ERA. However, he’s been shaky in three road starts, posting a large 7.05 ERA, and an unimpressive 1.63 WHIP. Zimmerman has made seven career starts versus the Padres, and all of those have occurred since 2011. In those outings, he posted a terrific 1.90 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, and had a better than 11:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Not to make light of those outstanding performances, but this will be a vastly different Padres lineup today, compared to the one he’s faced in recent seasons.
The Padres Odraisamer Despaigne will make his fourth start of the season tonight. The Cuban born right-hander has a lofty 5.30 ERA during his first three starts in 2015. This will be his first career start versus Washington.
Despite only scoring three runs last night, the Nationals bats have been sizzling hot of late. They’re averaging 7.3 runs per game, and are hitting a sizzling .324 as a team during their previous seven outings. Unfortunately their pitching has struggled in recent games, allowing 12 hits or more in four of their previous five, and opponents have a team batting average of 308 versus Washington during the last seven games. The Nationals have gone over the total in each of their previous eight overall, and are 13-6-1 over the total in twenty road games this season. Those road tilts have averaged a combined 10.4 runs scored per game.
The San Diego Padres enter tonight having gone 23-13 (63.9%) over the total this season, and that includes 6-2 during their last eight. They’ve also gone 12-4 over the total in 2015 as a money line underdog of +100 or more like they will be this evening. Those sixteen games averaged a combined 9.7 runs per contest. The Padres bullpen has struggled mightily so far in 2015, posting a collective ERA of 4.72, and they’ve allowed an alarming 16 home runs already.
I like the betting value of going over the total in this game, especially considering such a low posted number, and that will be one of my MLB picks on Friday.
