It’s time to gear it up for the stretch run of the 2014 MLB season as we hit the last day of August. Teams are jockeying for position to get into the post-season while we keep grinding away with profitable betting days with our picks.

Capper Catalano’s Record
185-161 -16.82 Units

This is at least the 4th straight day in which we have went 1-1 and still have made a profit by hitting our 2 unit picks while losing the 1 unit pick. Stephen Strasburg finally showed what he was made of in a victory over Seattle while Zack Greinke couldn’t squeeze out the win for the Dodgers against a much improved San Diego Padres team as they lost by a run. Time to keep plugging away.

Washington Nationals (77-57) vs. Seattle Mariners (72-62)
Fading Iwakuma?
This is a tough thing to do although it seems like a good spot for the Nats, who lead the Atlanta Braves in the National League East Division by 7 games while the Seattle Mariners are fighting for their post-season lives having lost 3 straight games and just not looking playoff-ready.

Hisashi Iwakuma (12-6, 2.83), who has provided the M’s with outstanding work all season long, is coming off of an atrocious start in which he allowed 5 runs and 6 hits in just 2 1/3 innings to Boston. I remember this game and I actually thought that Iwakuma got the hook too early, but it was a good call as Seattle battled back for the victory. The obvious question is “Will the poor performance against Boston have affected Iwakuma’s confidence?”

Washington really is in the catbird’s seat. They’ve already embarrassed “King” Felix Hernandez as Hernandez allowed 6 home runs. They defeated the Mariners again on Saturday while holding the Mariners to just 1 run and now the Nats are gunning for Seattle’s #2 pitcher in Iwakuma as their offense is running on all cylinders.

Jayson Werth continues to dominate left-handed pitching and the Nats were off to a 2 run lead before yesterday’s game really even started.

Although Iwakuma is a right –hander, I think the confidence level in a deep Washington starting lineup will either take this to Seattle’s bullpen or just be enough to overtake the Japanese import. Take the live dog here in the division leading Nationals.

Cleveland Indians (70-64) vs. Kansas City Royals (74-61)
K.C. Gets To Showcase Their Talent On National Television
The Kansas City Royals have come a long way in 2014 as they’re currently tied with the Detroit Tigers for top spot in the American League Central Division. This is a huge game for the home team and the Royals send out the very competent Danny Duffy (8-11, 2.47). The Royals clearly have the advantage in tonight’s starting pitching matchup, but the same old question is “Will Duffy receive a sufficient amount of run support to win this very important game?”

We all know that the Tribe can score runs at a rapid pace with player like Michael Brantley. The Royals can also score runs, but this is a team that lacks power. They’re 3rd in the majors in batting average, but don’t have a hitter with more than 17 home runs on their squad.

You never know who will be the star of the game for K.C. whether it be Alex Gordon, Billy Butler, or Salvador Perez, but more times than most this season someone has come up big in a clutch situation. Unfortunately when Duffy has started this hasn’t been the case.

Cleveland is hardly out of the playoff scene. They’re 3.5 games behind the Royals and Tigers in the division and also 3.5 games behind the 2nd spot in the Wild Card in the American League. This game is huge. I’m siding with K.C. at home. They have the pitching advantage with Duffy over House and good pitching wins baseball games in a game like this. Look for Kansas City to put an end to their 3 game losing streak.
