Struggling Offenses From Dodgers & Padres To Produce A Low Scoring Game

LA Dodgers

Two west coast teams match up today when the San Diego Padres limp in to visit the Los Angeles Dodgers. We are going to look at the total for this game as the Padres counter with Dodger familiar Clayton Richard.

San Diego Padres
Clayton Richard takes the mound for San Diego and comes in with a 3.51 ERA and 1.62 whip this season between Chicago and San Diego. This should be familiar territory for him as he has spent a considerable amount of time with San Diego although he has not faced the Dodgers that much the past few seasons. In his one opportunity against Los Angeles this year he was rocked for two earned runs off three hits in some relief work for Chicago back in May. As well, in the past three seasons he has had little success versus Los Angeles with a 6.97 ERA allowing eight earned runs in just over 10 innings of work. However, with all that being said recently he has been pitching very well and in his last two starts, he has allowed zero earned runs off of 10 hits in 13 innings of work. Although he may have trouble keeping Los Angeles down to a reasonable number with the combination of his counterpart today I am anticipating a low final in this matchup.

At the plate, San Diego has been poor in their recent road swing averaging less than three runs per game in their past five contests. I expect them to have a lot of trouble today at the plate.

Los Angeles Dodgers
Julio Urias takes the mound today for the Dodgers and the 20-year-old has a 3.71 ERA and 1.51 whip. Not great numbers but he has been better in Los Angeles with a 2.90 ERA with batters hitting just under .280 against him. Despite the high batting average, Urias has been outstanding in his last four appearances on the mound allowing two earned runs in just under 21 innings of work. His last two opportunities on the mound have been starts and he has allowed just one earned run in 12 innings off of 12 hits. He has a ton of potential and should be able to hold down a mediocre at best San Diego offense in the run column. Although Los Angeles broke out the bats in a 10-8 win in Colorado it took them until the eighth inning to finally do something.

Over the course of their last 10 games, for the most part, they have been struggling at the plate and prior to their eighth and ninth inning outburst in Colorado in their previous seven games they have been averaging below three runs per contest. They should be able to score a few today but I would not be surprised if they struggled just a touch, at least enough to stay under this total.

MLB Odds
Oddsmakers have set the total for this game at 7.5 across the board. For my MLB pick, I'm going to back under. Both pitchers have been really solid recently on top of the fact that both offenses have seen their share of struggles over the past several games. Expect for the pitchers to dominate the day.
