The Cardinals are out while the Brewers still have a chance to make the postseason, and we’ve got a free baseball pick for their series opener in St. Louis on Friday.

Having been officially knocked from playoff contention last night by their rivals from Chicago, the St. Louis Cardinals will now try to do the same to another NL Central foe when they open a weekend series against the Milwaukee Brewers. Their playoff chances hanging by a thread, Milwaukee sends Chase Anderson (11-4, 2.81) to the bump against John Gant (0-0, 3.65), and sports books have yet to release numbers for the contest.

The Brewers enter the final weekend of the regular season two games behind Colorado for the second NL Wild Card. Not only does Milwaukee need to sweep St. Louis the next three days to have a realistic chance, the Brew Crew needs help from the Dodgers who are in Denver for a series against the Rockies.

Gant Going Against Brewers For 1st Time
Sidelined for all of July and much of August due to a strained oblique, Anderson will make his 25th start of the campaign in a do-or-die situation for the Brewers. His personal 11-4 record is nice, but Milwaukee is a more pedestrian 13-11 overall with the former Sooner on the bump. Anderson was roughed up in his only start at Busch this year (4.1 IP, 4 ER), but his bullpen and offense bailed him out with a 5-4 win as +135 underdogs on the MLB odds.

St. Louis is giving Gant a late look after a decent showing in Triple-A this year. Originally a 21st-round pick by the Mets in 2011, Gant consistently excelled in the K column during his climb through the minors, but that was often accompanied by a high walk rate as well. He has also been bitten by the home run ball in his brief tenure with the Cardinals this year, serving up three in his 12,1 frames. Gant’s second start this month will be his first career appearance against the Brewers.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick
The Brewers have actually played better against the Cardinals in St. Louis than at home over the years, and that has certainly been the case in 2017 with Milwaukee 5-2 in the previous games at Busch. Craig Counsell’s crew took 3-of-4 in Arch City back in June, ‘over’ bettors also cashing three times in that set (10-5-1 O/U/P for season).

The forecast looks fine for tonight and the rest of the weekend, Friday’s scrap beginning in the mid-70s under clear skies and with a 6-9 mph north breeze (in from left). Neither team is playing well, Milwaukee coming to town 3-5 its last eight and St. Louis having dropped five of its last six. I’m looking for a 9 run total and will make my free baseball pick on the ‘under.’
