The NL Wild Card Game promises to feature an epic pitching duel. Both Giants and Mets sending their top pitchers to the mound to help them get to the promise land. Our expert capper Charles Stark analyzes and provides his MLB pick.

Probably the best pitching matchup of the postseason will take place today when Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants take on Noah Syndergaard and the New York Mets. We are going to look at the total for this matchup as odds makers have set it quite low with these two tough pitchers on the mound.

San Francisco Giants

Madison Bumgarner gets the start for San Francisco and comes in with a 2.74 ERA and 1.02 whip along with a 3.27 ERA versus New York this season. In his two starts versus the Mets, this season he has allowed just four earned runs in 11 innings pitched, however, the Mets have garnered 12 hits off him in that span and are hitting .279. Still, he is one of the best postseason pitchers of this generation and so it's hard for me to believe the Mets are going to light him up tonight. More likely he is going to come in and put up plenty of zeros versus a New York team that can struggle at the plate at times. Bumgarner has had a couple tough outings recently and in his last start against the Mets he gave up four earned runs in five innings off of six hits back in mid-August. Overall he should be up to come in and hold down New York to reasonable number considering they rank 25th in the major leagues in both runs scored per game in batting average.

New York Mets

Noah Syndergaard gets the start for the Mets and comes in with a 2.60 ERA and 1.15 whip along with a 2.63 ERA versus the Giants this season. In his two starts versus San Francisco, he has allowed four earned runs in just over 13 innings of work while allowing just seven hits and there is no reason to think he can't come in and be consistent tonight. Over his last 10 starts, he has been lights out allowing just 19 earned runs in six innings of work with just two bad outings mixed in. Surprisingly his last start at home he gave up five earned runs in just under four innings of work to the lowly Atlanta Braves, but I believe this gives him just a great opportunity to bounce back tonight versus San Francisco. Like the Mets the Giants have not set the world on fire this season at the plate in their batting average drops from .273 at home to just .244 on the road which ranks them 26th in the major leagues.

MLB odds

MLB odds makers have come out with a total of 6 for this game with higher juice on the under across the board.  You can still find some good odds though at SBR and for my MLB pick I'm going to back under the total like at Bookmaker -120. Although there is higher juice on the under at most places this game sets up as the classic pitcher's duel.
