The red-hot Texas Rangers are big underdogs Tuesday when they open a key set against the Red Sox. Join us for a free MLB pick in the showdown of contenders at Fenway Park.

Baseball economics play a large role in players moving around from team to team during their careers, so it’s not uncommon for them to come up against their former clubs. Still, a couple of hitters meeting up against their old teams play as much a role in Tuesday’s series opener between the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox as the starting pitching matchup.

That mound pairing for the 7:10 PM (ET) battle at Fenway is Andrew Cashner for the visitors and Rick Porcello for the Beantown 9. Overnights at BetOnline had Boston -190 chalk, an early 10-run total dropping to 9½.

Moreland & Napoli Could Swing Decisive Sticks

Cashner picked up his first win last Wednesday against Philadelphia on MLB odds of -135 at home, but could easily be 5-2 on the season with a little help from Texas bats. He got that, finally, in the 9-3 trouncing of the Phils and is making his first career appearance against the Red Sox with a 3.12 road ERA this season, the Rangers losing all three starts. Porcello has really struggled at home with a 1-4 record in front of Red Sox Nation and a 5½ ERA. He has faced the Rangers once since joining the Sox, winning that matchup last season.

Former Ranger Mitch Moreland comes off Boston’s road trip with home runs in three consecutive games, and rookie Andrew Benintendi ended a 26 AB hitless streak in the same three games by collecting three hits. During Texas’ 11-1 surge, former Boston basher Mike Napoli has been heating up. He’s still hitting under .200 on the season, but has five homers and three multi-hit games the last 10 times his name was in the starting lineup. Dustin Pedroia nicknamed him ‘Hacksaw’ in his Sox days, and Napoli’s parked 26 at Fenway since 2013.

Rivalry Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

This has been a very even series since the second coming of the Senators moved to Texas in 1972, Boston holding a 230-225 edge in that span and each side taking care of business on their home diamonds. The Red Sox have won at almost a .600 clip at Fenway after taking three of the past four series here, all three games going ‘over’ in Beantown a year ago after all three stayed ‘under’ in 2015.

The weather looks pretty good right now, a bit muggy but in the low 60s with a light SE breeze (out to the Monster). Something has to give in this game as far as Cashner’s and Porcello’s home/road outcomes, and with Texas playing better I’ll gladly take a return like this for my free baseball pick.
