New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles

Rubber Match of Yanks and O’s Series
The Yankees and Orioles will play the finale of their three game series on Thursday. The first pitch at Camden Yards in Baltimore is slated for 7:05 PM ET. These AL East Division rivals have split the first two games with Baltimore winning 4-1 on Tuesday, and the Yankees in a 7-0 victory last night. Current MLB odds at Island Casino has both teams at -105 on the money line in addition to a posted total of 7.5. Despite the loss on Wednesday, Baltimore has gone 15-5 at home versus the Yankees since 2014.

Starting Pitchers
The Yankees will send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound on Thursday. Tanaka has posted a stellar 2.87 ERA and 0.97 WHIP during his first five starts of the season. The right-handed hurler has also compiled nearly a 5:1 strikeout to walk ration thus far. Tanaka has been especially sharp during his previous three outings, posting an excellent 0.87 WHIP, 18 strikeouts, and only 1 walk. Since 2014, Tanaka has made four starts against Baltimore, and had a sparkling 0.91 WHIP in those appearances in addition to an outstanding 11:1 strikeout to walk ratio. However, this will be Tanaka’s first career start at Camden Yards.

Right-hander Kevin Gausman will be making just his third start of the season for Baltimore. Gausman’s first two outings were very good ones, evidenced by compiling a 2.45 ERA and a terrific 0.91 WHIP. He’s made five career starts versus the Yankees, and all of those have taken place since 2014. During those appearances Gausman posted a shiny 2.57 ERA. Two of those five outings came at Camden Yards, and Gausman allowed just 1 earned run during 12.0 innings pitched.

Ending a Six Game Skid
The Yankees were able to snap a six game losing streak with last night’s win. It was only their second win over its last ten away games. They’ll enter Thursday with a poor 9-16 (.360) overall record, and that includes 4-9 (.308) on the road. They had 10 hits last night, and it was just the fourth time over their last twenty outings in which they amassed 10 or more hits in a game.

It was also only the fourth time in twenty games that they scored more than four runs. The Yankees are averaging a paltry 2.9 runs per game on the road, and have a poor .612 OPS during those outings. New York has gone over the total in just four of their previous eighteen games. Since 2015, they’re 30-14 (68.2%) under the total in away games when facing a team with a winning record.

Play on the Low Side of the Totals Ledger
Baltimore has cracked 17 home runs during their first fourteen home games, but they’ve gone over the total on only three of those occasions. As a matter of fact, Baltimore has surpassed the total just twice in thirteen games this season when facing a fellow AL East opponent.

Final Take and Pick
When all things are considered, this game has the ear marks of a low scoring affair, and one of my Thursday MLB picks will be indicative of that notion.
