Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright in action

Two of my favorite pitchers take the mound when the Cardinals and Adam Wainwright take on the Marlins and Dan Straily. Oddsmakers have set the total decently high for this National League game but is there any way these two pitchers can keep this game under the total?

St. Louis Cardinals

Adam Wainwright takes the mound for St. Louis and comes in with a 6.30 ERA and 1.97 whip, a far cry from his career 3.22 ERA and 1.20 whip. Wainwright has really struggled this year and has been giving away runs in bunches with really only having two decent outings so far this season out of his six starts.

However, prior to his last rough start versus Milwaukee, he was decent in his two games allowing six total earned runs over 11 innings of work and I look for him to be sharp today. At the plate St. Louis has picked things up from their slow start and is currently hitting .259 as a team as well as averaging 8.93 hits per game both of which rank them eighth in the major leagues. Although they are coming around a bit at the plate I think they will have a tough matchup today against who I believe is one of the more underrated pitchers in baseball.

Miami Marlins

Dan Straily will get the start for Miami and comes in with a 4.65 ERA and 1.19 whip. I do believe he is one of the more underrated pitchers in all of baseball and looking at his numbers he’s had a little bit of tough luck as his hit totals have been really low this season. Just looking at his last four games for example although he’s allowed just nine earned runs over 22 innings of work, what is more, impressive is the fact that he has allowed just 11 hits in that same timeframe.

Just in his last game, he allowed four earned runs but off of just three hits courtesy of two home runs. Straily has the type of stuff that should keep the Cardinals off-balance and off the scoreboard for most of the game. At the plate, Miami has been much better than most people probably expected to hit .265 as a team and averaging 9.43 hits per game ranking them sixth and third in the major leagues respectively. Their power numbers aren’t great but they have been pretty consistent in pushing runs across the plate, but I don’t think it’ll be enough to get over this total.

Oddsmakers have come out with a total of 8 for this matchup and for my MLB pick, I will back under. When looking at the starting pitchers overall numbers compared to the decent hitting statistics of these two teams the line looks a little bit off, so I will back the odds makers.
