Our handicapping professional provides us with a betting preview on Sunday’s Cardinals and Cubs game. Be sure to go inside and read this compelling article which culminates with an MLB pick.

Cardinals (Martinez) vs Cubs (Lester) 8:08 PM

The Cardinals and Cubs will conclude their weekend series on Sunday night at Wrigley Field. Tonight will be the rubber match of this 3-game set. The Cubs prevailed 5-0 on Friday night, and St. Louis rebounded yesterday afternoon for a 10-4 win. The season series between these two NL Central rivals is deadlocked at 9-9.

Current (10:05 AM ET) MLB betting odds at Heritage shows the Cubs as a -162 money line favorite. The Cubs are also -1.5 (+176) on the run line and St. Louis is +1.5 (-189). Heritage is presently offering all new players a 50% cash bonus on deposits of $300 or more.

Weather Factor
There’s a 52% chance of rain tonight. Winds are projected to be 8 MPH and blowing out to dead center field.

Starting Pitchers
Carlos Martinez will get the nod tonight for St. Louis. Martinez is 0-3 in his last 3 team starts against the Cubs this year, and his awful 6.88 ERA during those outings was a major reason why.

Jon Lester has been absolutely lights out over his last 8 starts, evidenced by an excellent 0.97 ERA during those outings. Lester has made 2 starts against St. Louis this season, compiling a terrific 1.29 ERA and 0.71 WHIP. The Cubs are 12-2 at home in 2016 with Lester as their starter, and his 1.86 ERA through those 14 starts has been an integral part of that success.

Best Home and Away Teams
The Cardinals enter today with a 48-32 (.600) road record, and there’s been nobody better in away games this season.

The Cubs have been by far the best home team in MLB, going a superb 56-24 (.700) at Wrigley Field. However, they’re home success hasn’t included games against St. Louis. The Cardinals are 6-3 at Wrigley Field in 2016.

Final Take and MLB Pick
St. Louis is currently one-half game behind both San Francisco and the New York for the top National League wild card spot.

Chicago (98-56) has already clinched the NL Central, and it’s just a matter of when they’ll reach the 100-win plateau at this juncture. They’ve also secured the top National League seed for the upcoming playoffs.

Obviously, St. Louis has a lot more to play for tonight compared to the Cubs. Nevertheless, I just can’t ignore the decisive starting pitching advantage that Chicago possesses with Lester over Martinez. I like the Cubs to come up with a convincing win this evening, and one of my Sunday MLB predictions will echo that sentiment.
