Time to bring back the Opposite Play Of the Day today, and for the first time this season it is going to be on a small favorite. Follow along and see what we have for your MLB picks!
The Kansas City Royals have the best record in the American League and have a winning record on the road. The Cleveland Indians are last in the AL Central, have a rookie pitcher on the mound, and still for some reason are favored in this spot. The Indians came out by MLB odds makers as a -110 favorite and at most books it is around this number. The best number I have found for them is at -108 at Bet Online sports book and Sports Betting sports book.
Starting for the Royals Edinson Volquez takes the mound with a 3.15 ERA and 1.25 WHIP. He is also arguably the Royals best starter (maybe not now though because they picked up Cueto) and the 10 year veteran has had a solid year. After a tough outing in Houston in his last four games he has been stellar allowing five earned runs over 24 innings in four games. Again, we are on the OPOD today and for him to be the underdog and the ace of arguably the best team in the American League just does not make any sense. For the Indians Cody Anderson will take the mound with a 1.91 ERA and 0.91 WHIP in just five career starts. In his short tenure so far he is pitched very well but in his last outing he got shelled allowing 10 hits and four earned runs in just over two innings, a game in which I had the over and predicted correctly. Besides that outing there is no doubt that he has pitched well, but still we are talking about a 24-year-old rookie who has only pitched five major league games and is facing again arguably the best team in the American League. He simply has no business being the favorite in this spot, yet the MLB odds makers have made him the small favorite, for me that really makes me double check things and another reason for me to make this the OPOD today.
At the Plate
Across the board Kansas City is the better hitting team, they are rank 10th in the major leagues in runs scored per game compared to Cleveland at 21st. In OPS the Royals are ranked seventh and the Indians 17th, and in batting average the Royals are ranked third with Cleveland ranked 22nd. On the offensive end there really is no comparison between these two teams, the Royals are the better hitting team, period... again just say it with me, OPOD.
When I'm handicapping, especially after having a bad weekend, it is good to mix things up a little bit and this is a perfect spot to put in the OPOD. All things considered in this spot we have the best team in the American League versus one of the worst, the ace of that team facing a rookie with only five career starts, and a very good hitting team versus a mediocre hitting team. The fact that the Royals are not the favorite really gets my radar up, but okay I will bite and take Cleveland in this spot.
