Regularly, the Red Sox make the Total line go high, but this is not the case as they travel to San Diego to face the Padres. Our betting expert looks into the MLB odds and provides his free pick.

Usually when there is a baseball game and the Boston Red Sox are involved the total is decently high. That is not the case today as they take on the San Diego Padres in San Diego with David Price on the mound. They will face Jarred Cosart who has struggled at times this year. Will these two pitchers be able to keep the run totals down?

Boston Red Sox
David Price takes the mound for Boston and comes in with a 3.92 ERA and 1.22 whip along with a 3.67 ERA and batters hitting .251 against him on the road. He seems to be hitting his stride right now and over his last six starts he has been really solid allowing just 15 earned runs in 47 innings of work. He remains to be a workhorse who goes deep into games and the Red Sox have won the last five times he has been on the mound. Petco Park is a pretty pitcher-friendly venue so I look for him to come in and have a really good day on the mound.

At the plate I have talked about it many times this year about how good this Boston Red Sox team both at home or away. However, they are not immune to having their own struggles at the plate at times and seem to either feast or famine their last several games. We could see them put up as many as 16 runs like they did in Oakland a few games back, or two games later getting shut out I. I don't believe they will get shut out today but I think the damage they will cause won't be enough to get over the total.

San Diego Padres
Jarred Cosart takes the mound for San Diego and comes in with a 5.14 ERA and 1.67 whip but just a 3.65 ERA at home. Looking at his numbers overall with batters hitting .274 against him in San Diego it looks like he will have a rough time today against the best hitting team in baseball. However, Cosart is a good major league pitcher and this is an opportunity for him to come in and pitch well after getting shelled his last outing in Atlanta. In his last few home starts he has been both good and subpar with his most recent outing being solid versus Arizona allowing one earned run off of eight hits in just under six innings of work. With a career 3.76 ERA and 1.41 whip he has the ability to keep even good hitting teams in check. This will be a challenge for him today.

At the plate the Padres have seen their own struggles this season and over the last 10 games there averaging just three runs per contest. Don't look for them to do a lot of damage versus Price.

MLB odds
Oddsmakers at Online Sportsbooks have set the total for this game at 7.5 which looks a bit low to me across the board. However, I believe both pitchers have the ability to keep these teams to a reasonable number so for my MLB pick I'm going to back under the total of 7.5.
