MLB handicapping professional Ross Benjamin provides a betting preview on Tuesday’s AL West game between the Angels and A’s. Ross uncovers a starting pitching edge that corresponds with one of his free MLB picks.

Los Angeles Angels At Oakland A’s

The A’s host the Angels on Tuesday in in the second of a 4-game series between these AL West rivals. The opening pitch at the Oakland Coliseum is slated for 10:05 PM ET. Current MLB betting odds have Oakland as anywhere from -105 to +105 on the moneyline, and there’s a posted total of 7.5.

Oakland won the series opener on Monday night by a score of 4-2. The A’s smacked 3 solo home runs, with a pair of round-trippers coming from Khris Davis and another from Stephen Vogt. A’s right-handed starter Kendall Gravemen got the win while allowing 2 earned runs in 6.0 innings. The A’s bullpen combined to pitch 3 scoreless innings while allowing 1 hit and walking 2.

Starting Pitchers

The Angels will go with right-hander Matt Shoemaker on Tuesday. Shoemaker was 9-13 with a 3.88 ERA in 24 starts last season. However, Shoemaker was dominant in his 3 starts in 2016 against Oakland. He posted a brilliant 1.42 ERA during those outings. Shoemaker has made 3 starts at Oakland since 9/11/2015 and compiled an excellent 0.94 ERA while doing so. On a negative note, Shoemaker was 4-9 in 15 road starts last year and posted a somewhat lofty 4.64 ERA.

Oakland turns to southpaw Sean Manaea for this evening’s start. Manaea was 7-9 with a 3.86 ERA during 24 starts in 2016. He was also 5-3 at home in 13 starts and had a more than respectable 3.02 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in those outings. This will be his first career start at home vs. the Angels. Manaea did make 2 starts in Anaheim in 2016 and he collected a solid 3.55 ERA during those appearances.

Shaky April Starts For Shoemaker

Shoemaker has struggled in his April starts during the past 2 seasons. The Angels hurler was 1-4 in 5 starts last April with a large 9.15 ERA and 1.89 WHIP. He surrendered 18 home runs a season ago and 6 of those were allowed in April during just 20 2/3 innings pitched. Going back to 2015, Shoemaker made 4 April starts and posted a sizable 6.00 ERA while allowing 4 home runs in 21.0 innings.

Final Thoughts & Pick

Not only has Shoemaker struggled in the opening month of the 2015 and 2016 seasons, his 2017 spring training starts were less than inspiring. Shoemaker made 5 spring starts and posted an unimpressive 5.29 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and gave up 5 home runs during only 17.0 innings. My lean is on the home team in this game.
