Chris Sale hasn’t had much luck against New York while wearing a Boston uniform. Will that trend will continue tonight despite the fact the Red Sox are favored?

MLB Tuesday: Yankees (5-5 SU, 6-4 O/U) vs. Red Sox (8-1 SU, 4-5 O/U)

Free MLB Pick: Yankees +131

Best Line Offered: Bookmaker

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3388244, "sportsbooksIds":[93,1275,169,180,1096], "LineTypeId":2, "PeriodTypeId":1}[/]

It’s one of the most storied rivalries in sports, and there’s no doubt that the talking heads in ESPN’s booth tonight will spend as much if not more time telling us about it and discussing the past as they do the action on the field between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

The cameras come on at 7 ET inside fabled Fenway Park, and it’s a fantastic pairing on the mound where Luis Severino (2-0, 1.38) toils for the Yankees against Boston’s Chris Sale (0-0, 0.82). It’s Sale and his Red Sox teammates who are priced as -145 favorites, and the 7-run total leans heavy to the "over" on what should be a chilly evening in Boston. More on the weather in just a bit.

Sale Yet To Beat Yanks In Red Sox Uniform

After coming home a winner twice as chalk to begin the season, we’ll now see if Severino can pay off as the underdog on the MLB odds board. The young Dominican worked into the sixth of the season opener at Toronto, keeping the Blue Jays off the pay station, and followed that up by pitching into the eighth last week in New York against the Rays. Severino has pitched well in Boston the last few seasons, sporting a 3.20 ERA in three starts and a relief appearance.

Sale has pitched well enough to have won both of his assignments this season, only to be done in by his bullpen at Tampa Bay to open the campaign before taking a no-decision in a 13-inning affair in Miami. This is his first appearance in Boston since Game 4 of the ALDS vs. Houston last year, and he went 7-3 with a 3.16 ERA in 13 starts here a year ago, though all three of his home matchups vs. the Yankees went into the loss column for the Red Sox despite his strong efforts (22.2 IP, 6 ER).

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

With 2,175 matchups behind them, the Yankees have won almost 200 more times than the Red Sox after taking three of the last four season series. New York also sent Boston fans home unhappy in five of nine battles at Fenway last season while winning 11 of 19 overall. Totals split in the 10 contests played in the Bronx, but "under" bettors were the big winners in the nine Beantown battles, returning to the pay window seven times in nine games.

Cold and damp is about the best that can be hoped for on the weather front. Most of the rain in the area should move out by game time, but with temps in the upper 30s for most of the game, things aren’t going to dry out quickly. It’s difficult to bet against Boston’s eight-game win streak, but that’s the direction I’m going with my MLB pick.
