Our MLB betting expert Ross Benjamin takes a look at a pair of starting pitching matchups for Monday in his constant quest for wagering value. Read this revealing sports handicapping article that hones in on the Nationals/Braves and Mariners/Angels games.

Nationals vs. Braves 7:10 PM ET
The Nationals will go with Stephen Strasburg on the mound tonight. The Washington hurler enters tonight in very good form over his last 3-starts posting a 2.29 ERA, a 0.86 WHIP, and struck out 21 while walking none. Unfortunately he’s gone a dismal 0-4 against the money versus the Braves this season with a 7.17 ERA, and allowed 6 home runs in just 21 1/3 innings pitched.

The Braves Ervin Santana enters tonight in bad form over his last 3-starts with a 5.29 ERA and 1.71 WHIP. In 3-starts versus the Nationals this season, Santana has posted a large 6.35 ERA. He’s seen just 1 of his 7 career starts versus Washington stay under the total.

Advantage: With both of these pitchers struggling versus tonight’s opponents during this 2014 season, and with the total on the MLB odds being so ridiculously low, I have a strong lead on this game developing into a high scoring affair. My advice is to strongly consider making a wager on going over the total in this one.

Mariners vs. Angels 10:05 PM ET
The Mariners Isashi Iwakuma has gone a superb 6-1 against the money in his career versus the Angels, with an excellent 1.75 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP, and all of those outings have taken place since 2012. The bad news is that the Seattle right-hander has been uncharacteristically shaky over his last 4-starts, posting a large 7.50 ERA, and none of those outings stayed under the total. On a more positive note, he’s gone 9-2 against the money on the road this season with a solid 3.21 ERA.

The Angels will go with the youngster Matt Shoemaker. He’s been absolutely brilliant over his last 5-starts, going 5-0 against the money, posting an excellent 1.11 ERA, and compiling a better than 4:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Shoemaker is a terrific 15-4 against the money this season with a 3.01 ERA.

Advantage: I understand how good Iwakuma has been over the past 3-seasons versus the Angels. However, he’s been on unsteady ground of late, and Shoemaker has been lights out in recent starts. My betting edge goes to Shoemaker over Iwakuma for my MLB picks in this one.
