It's the first Saturday in August and that means we are heading down the stretch of summertime. With this, so are the pennant races and those of betting baseball, we are paying very close attention.

3139332If you have been making MLB picks all season and still are, good for you as many others gave up on losing season weeks ago and are waiting for football. The rest of us keep grinding away and today I have a three-pack of totals to ponder.

Miami and Atlanta, the Opposite of Yesterday

In Friday's article on totals, I took the Under on the Marlins and Braves. For today, I'm going the other way, taking the OVER 9.5 on the sportsbooks original MLB odds. Miami starting pitcher Daniel Straily has been throwing like he's arm weary, as in his last four starts covering 20 innings, he has given up 34 hits (five that flew over the fence). He will take on Atlanta's Mike Foltynewicz, who was having a pretty good season, but he was roughed up in last outing in Philadelphia for five runs in four innings, while handing out three free passes. With Foltynewicz 15-5 OVER in home night games the last three years, I will back the higher score.

Brewers and Rays Starters Will Limit Run Production

Milwaukee and Tampa Bay remain in playoff contention in part because of how well their starting pitchers have performed, with both in the Top 7 in the majors in ERA. Two hurlers who have made huge contributions will start this evening, Zach Davies for the Brewers and Alex Cobb for Tampa Bay. Davies is 6-0 on the road this season with a sterling 2.83 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. Cobb was knocked around in his last start at Houston, but for the season has an excellent 2.58 ERA when pitching under the dome in Clearwater. As long the bullpens do not mess this up, I will support the UNDER 8.5.

UNDER 8.5 Runs (+105) at Heritage

No Total Released, No Problem With Wade Miley Pitching

In looking over what to choose on today's baseball docket, my eyes were immediately drawn to Wade Miley of Baltimore. This guy stinks and his 5.65 ERA honestly does not do him justice, as his WHIP of 1.76 tells you more about his skill level. Because this article had to be in Friday night and Detroit is starting Drew VerHagen, who has made two relief appearance totaling four innings in 2017, no money line or total had been released. Never fear, as Miley has been a part of four consecutive OVERs. In the four prior contests that were all Under's, only once did he allow fewer than four runs and in those games, the Orioles only tallied nine total runs. Truthfully, I will take OVER on any total that is below 12!
