Today is the first official day of summer and what better way to ring in the new season with a couple of winners as we provide Saturday’s betting picks of the day.

Detroit Tigers (38-32) vs. Cleveland Indians (37-37)
Verlander is Due
Contract signings can often mean an immediate decline in an athlete’s performance. Justin Verlander (6-7,4.98) is a grade A example of this as he simply hasn’t been the same pitcher over the last year and a half.

Before the renewed contract, Verlander was thought of as one of the top pitchers in the majors. Now, the Tigers are lucky if he keeps them in the game as he often gets off to slow starts and puts Detroit “behind the 8-ball”.

Although Cleveland has a deadly and deep offense, they’re often inconsistent at times as record indicates. Look for Verlander to come out strong tonight. In his last 3 outings, JV has gotten rocked as he’s allowed 19 runs in just 18 2/3 innings. He’ s too good a pitcher to perform like this on a regular basis.

Two Martinez’s Are Better Than One
Even though Miguel Cabrera is the leader of the Tigers squad, both Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez have really been doing some damage lately. J.D. Martinez has homered in 3 consecutive games and is 13 for his last 27 with 4 HR and 11 RBI. He’s also hitting nearly .400 for the month of June.

Victor Martinez has done it all season with 18 HR, 47 RBI, and a .328 batting average. Martinez is also 10 for his last 27 with 2 HR and 6 RBI. Verlander should get ample support from this Tigers offense as anyone from 1to 9 can hurt an opposing pitcher. This is too good a team to be slumping.

Milwaukee Brewers (45-30) vs. Colorado Rockies (34-39)
Most Improved Team In Baseball
The Milwaukee Brewers are by far the most improved team in baseball. Their lineup is deadly with the likes of Jonathan Lucroy (8 HR, 38 RBI, .328), Carlos Gomez (12 HR, 40 RBI, .316, 11 SB,) Ryan Braun (10 HR, 39 RBI, .285), Scooter Gennett (.311), and Aramis Ramirez .

This team is so good that even a hitter like Jean Segura, who has been slumping all season, can come out and have a huge 2 home run game like he did last night.

In all, the Rockies and Brewers had a combined 23 runs and 35 hits in yesterday’s 13-10 Milwaukee victory at Coors Field. Coors Field is such a hitter’s park that I don’t know if any betting total is safe. Today, it’s listed at 11 runs and if players like Corey Dickerson continue to mash the baseball (4 for 5, 3 runs, 1 HR and 3 RBI), no total will be safe.

The Coors Edge
Coors has really aided in the Rockies lineup, especially in their top 4 hitters. Troy Tulowitzki leads the league with a .363 batting average, but he’s hitting .487 at Coors Field as opposed to .252 on the road; that’s the Coors advantage and the altitude is why there is so much run production.

A betting total of 11 runs usually tells me that winds are blowing out at stadiums such as Wrigley Field, but in this case it’s normal. Look for both of these teams to keep taking advantage of Coors Field.
