A couple of veteran hurlers face each other in St. Louis today, and we have a free MLB pick as Matt Cain and the Giants meet Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals.

St. Louis used to be a rather unfriendly place for visitors. That hasn’t been the case this season, however, after the San Francisco Giants won their 2nd-straight in the series on Saturday to extend the Cardinals’ skid to four games and leave them just 11-13 at Busch Stadium. The clubs wrap up their weekend set Sunday afternoon (2:15 PM ET) with a pair of veterans, Matt Cain and Adam Wainwright, on the mound; BetOnline has the Cards -150 with 8½ for the scoreboard hurdle.

Both bullpens were leaky Friday night when the Giants posted a 6-5 decision, all but one of the runs scoring from the sixth on. Saturday saw the teams play scoreless baseball for 12 innings before San Francisco broke through for a 3-1 triumph. Jeff Samardzija and Carlos Martinez started the pitchers duel that closed with the Cardinals -130 on the MLB odds.

Both Hurlers Better At Home Than The Road

San Francisco has won Cain’s last two starts, most recently this past Monday at home vs. the Dodgers, to move to 5-3 behind the veteran righthander this year. The Alabama native has some huge home/road splits so far, sitting 3-0 with a 1.19 ERA at AT&T Park which is offset by a 7.32 ERA away from San Francisco. Cain has made seven starts in this park since it opened in ’06, two of those coming in the 2012 NLCS, and is 1-4 with a 5.97 ERA (40.2 IP).

Wainwright looked like his old self last Sunday against the Cubs, the big righty tossing seven scoreless in a 5-0 St. Louis win over Chicago. The effort was just his first quality start of the campaign, but marked the fourth win in five games for the Cardinals despite his struggles. Like Cain, Wainwright has been far better at home (3.86 ERA) compared to on the road (7.11), and also like Cain vs. the Redbirds, he has not been at his best when facing the G-Men. San Francisco has beaten Wainwright three of the last four times, the 35 year old pitching to a 4.74 ERA in those contests.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

The weekend set is slated to close with crew chief Tom Hallion calling balls and strikes. The veteran umpire has a string of seven consecutive ‘over’ winners to his credit after opening 2017 with an ‘under.’ That pronounced trend goes contrasts with previous seasons when the New York native exhibited a slight lean to the low side of totals. This is his Hallion’s plate assignment in St. Louis since 2013, a victory for the Cardinals and bettors on the ‘under.’

Rain has led to delays in each of the first two games, but everything looks fine and dandy this afternoon with sunshine, afternoon temps climbing to 70 and a 10-12 mph westerly breeze (out to right). I really don’t trust either team or either pitcher, and will be playing the low side of the total for my free baseball pick
