Chris Sale has often been a victim of no support from the Boston bats, but he’s a big favorite on the MLB odds Friday when the Red Sox begin a weekend series in Anaheim against the Angels.

MLB Season Record: 48-52-1 (-2.20)

It wasn’t exactly the results John Farrell and the Boston Red Sox were hoping for coming out of the All-Star break, but after splitting a pair of 4-game sets with the Yankees and Blue Jays, they’ll try to find their groove on a long flight out west for the next week. First up is a weekend series with the Los Angeles Angels, Friday’s opener pitting Chris Sale (11-3, 2.59) against Ricky Nolasco (4-10, 4.82), with BetOnline chalking Boston on a -195 line and 7½ for the scoreboard target.

The Red Sox begin the journey with a 2½-game lead over Tampa Bay in the AL East, with New York in third just 3½ back. The Angels have moved up a spot into third place in the AL East, but that’s a distant 17 games off the pace being set by Houston.

Nolasco Working With Extra Rest

Boston is 13-6 when Sale takes the mound, and five of the losses came when he surrendered two runs or less. The lack of offense and/or help from his bullpen has cost bettors following him and the Sox on the MLB odds nearly 9 units in those five contests. The lanky lefty made three starts for the White Sox in Anaheim, Chicago winning twice and Sale posting a 2.25 ERA. Mike Trout is 5-for-16 (.313) against him lifetime, taking Sale deep once.

Originally slated to start Wednesday’s series finale against the Nationals, Nolasco was pushed back two days to face the Red Sox instead. He began the second half with a solid effort a week ago to open the homestand against the Rays, but the LA offense failed to support him in a 2-1 loss. It has been a mix of very good and very bad against Boston over his career, Nolasco 2-2 in seven assignments with a 5.68 ERA (38 IP).

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Anaheim has been a tough stop for the Red Sox in recent years, the Angels winning 12 of the last 17 on this diamond. Those games have seen some solid pitching and defense as well, ‘under’ bettors cashing 11 of the last 15 contests played at the Big A. The ‘over’ was a winner two times about a month ago at Fenway where LA took the final two games of the set.

All signs point to a pretty nice day in Anaheim, with clear skies and the thermometer climbing into the 80s. It should be back in the high 70s by first pitch with a light SW breeze (out to center). With Boston’s offense a bit slow right now, my free baseball pick will be on the low side of the total.
