With postseason implication the Red Sox host the Rays as they are focused on having a strong presence in the playoffs. Our expert looks at the MLB Odds and he provides his very own pick.

Today in Boston the Red Sox take on the Tampa Bay Rays as they stay focused on getting to and making a deep playoff push. As usual odds makers have set a pretty high total in Fenway as the best hitting team in baseball takes on one of the most subpar teams. Looking closely at the pitching matchup will we see a high-scoring affair or will these two guys pitch better than anticipated.

Tampa Bay Rays
Drew Smyly takes the mound for Tampa Bay and comes in with a 4.80 ERA and 1.23 whip and was fantastic last time against Boston allowing zero earned runs in eight innings. He actually allowed just one hit in that contest so this total seems a bit surprising considering the fact his counterpart today has a decently low ERA. I believe that game versus the Red Sox was more of an anomaly than anything and I don't expect him to be nearly as effective this second time around in Boston. Overall we're looking at a guy that has a 5.38 ERA on the road while allowing batters to hit just under .300 against him. Recently he has been decent but he has given up four home runs in his last three starts and I have a hard time believing he's going to be able to keep the best hitting team in baseball to a reasonable number.

At the plate, Tampa Bay has been one of the most inconsistent teams in the league this season. However, they have some decent power numbers ranking seventh in home runs per game, 13th in slugging, and 16th in OPS. They should be able to score enough today to help get is over this big total.

Boston Red Sox
Steven Wright gets the start for Boston and comes in with a solid 3.18 ERA and 1.21 whip overall but a 4.30 ERA at home. As well, in Boston batters are hitting just under .260 against him and he is coming off of a rough outing versus Kansas City in which he allowed five earned runs on seven hits in six innings which included two home runs. Although his overall numbers have been decent on closer look he can really get hit hard at times and two times in his last five starts teams have done just that which included the aforementioned Kansas City game along with Detroit garnering eight earned runs in just four innings against him. Although he'll probably pitch decently against a Tampa Bay team that has had their share of troubles at the plate this season I doubt he will get out of this contest unscathed.

At the plate, Boston is the best hitting team in baseball and rank first in all the major categories including runs scored per game, batting average, and OPS. Although they struggled a bit yesterday getting consistent quality at-bats I expect for them to bounce right back today and put up quite a few runs.

MLB odds
Oddsmakers have set the total on the MLB odds board for this game at 9.5 with a regular juice of -110 like at Heritage sports. For my MLB pick I will take over the total in this contest is I believe Tampa Bay will build the score and that Boston will have a tremendous day at the plate. Expect a lot of runs early and often today in Fenway.
