The wild card race is heating up, and the Astros & Mariners have a lot to play for. Our expert capper takes a look into the MLB odds and finds a betting angle for tonight's game.

Things are really starting to heat up in the wildcard races and this particular series has a ton of meaning as the Houston Astros visit the Seattle Mariners. We are going to take a look at the total for this game because it looks like to me there might be some value in backing the offenses to put quite a few runs across the plate.

Houston Astros
Collin McHugh gets the start for Houston and comes in with a 4.86 ERA and 1.49 whip along with just a 1.50 ERA versus Seattle this season in three starts. That being said McHugh still has a 6.04 ERA on the road with batters hitting .322 against him this season. He can be hot and cold at times like allowing just one earned run to the Chicago Cubs in his last start or allowing five earned runs at Texas in his start previous to that. On the road, the struggle has been real for him and in his last five road starts, he has allowed 20 earned runs in 24 innings of work while allowing 38 hits in that span. Today despite the fact he's had success against Seattle it seems he is due to get hit pretty hard by them.

Offensively Houston has a decent enough offense to put up some runs and is coming off a solid eight-run off of 12 hits performance versus Texas. Things will be different for them today as they take on perennial All-Star Felix Hernandez for the first time this season.

Seattle Mariners
Felix Hernandez takes the mound for Seattle and comes in with a 3.58 ERA and 1.28 whip while the Mariners have won eight out of last 10 times he has started on the mound. Surprisingly his ERA actually goes up at home to 3.71 but batters are still hitting just .291 against him in Seattle. He is always good for a quality start and goes deep into games but he hasn't been as dominant as years past. Just recently he's had some real struggles allowing six earned runs in back to back games versus the Texas Rangers mostly due to giving up the long ball. I don't expect him to get knocked around a whole lot but for Houston to find a way to scrape together a few runs.

At the plate Seattle has been one of the better hitting teams in all of baseball ranking seventh in runs scored per game and eighth in OPS. They have just been really consistent and are coming off a good series against Los Angeles in which they scored eight runs two games in a row before scraping out a 2-1 win in the series finale. They are hot right now and I expect for them to go up to the plate and put together a lot of quality at-bats tonight.

MLB odds
Oddsmakers have come out with the total for this game at 8 across the board with a little bit higher juice on backing the under. For my MLB pick, though I believe there's better value in taking over the total of 8 like at Pinnacle sports +101. Considering McHugh has low ERA versus Seattle and Felix Hernandez is well, Felix Hernandez, you would think this would be a low-scoring affair but I like for the offenses to show up tonight.
