Both the Reds and Cardinals look to improve on their sub .500 record when they meet up today in St. Louis. For this matchup we’re going to look at the total and see if there is any value on backing the over.

Cincinnati Reds

Tim Adelman takes the mound for Cincinnati and comes in with a 2.70 ERA and 0.80 whip so far this season. He has come out and thrown two good games so far allowing just three total earned runs over 10 innings versus Milwaukee and the Chicago Cubs combined. That being said though I think you might find things a little bit tough today against a St. Louis offense that seems to be picking things up over the past couple of weeks. At the plate Cincinnati themselves have been pretty good across the board averaging 4.73 runs per game and hitting .245 as a team ranking them 11th and 16th in major league baseball respectively. As well, they have been good at not striking out very much, ranking eighth, and have a solid OPS at .750 which ranks them 10th. This is a good Cincinnati lineup from top to bottom and I expect them to put up a few runs today.

 St. Louis Cardinals

Lance Lynn takes the mound for St. Louis and comes in with a 2.70 ERA and 1.03 whip in four starts this season. Lynn can always be really tough to face but I think Cincinnati has enough on the offensive side to go ahead and put up a few runs today against him. If they can get to him than the Reds should be able to put up some runs as well against the Cardinals very poor relief staff which has a 5.46 ERA with batters hitting .272 against them. Offensively St. Louis, although their statistics are not great, have started to put things together and scoring some runs. Over their last six games they are averaging over five runs per game so don’t look for Adelman to get out of this game unscathed. Currently the Cardinals are hitting just .235 as a team and averaging just 3.70 runs per game ranking them 23rd and 24th in the major leagues respectively. However, with their recent surge of runs I don’t expect the statistics to stay like this as we keep getting deeper into the season.

 MLB odds

Oddsmakers have come out for the total this game at 8 and for my major league pick, I’m going to back over the total. Both pitchers come in with some solid ERA’s but expect for the offenses to shine today and for both teams to put up their share of runs.
