Here's our free MLB pick for Game 2 between the Philadelphia Phillies & the Washington Nationals, with O’Sullivan vs. Scherzer in what figures to be a total pitching mismatch.

Philadelphia Phillies (O’Sullivan) at Washington Nationals (Scherzer) (-1 ½ R/EVEN) 7:05 ET
Philadelphia and Washington continue their 4-game weekend set.  National’s won Game 1 (5-2) last night, behind another strong home outing by Fister.  Tonight, this 4-game set continues with O’Sullivan vs. Scherzer in what figures to be a total pitching mismatch.  In yesterday’s report, I noted that although these teams each had a 3-6 record at the beginning at the 4-game weekend; the end result of the series would show the teams to be “ships passing in the night.”  I have no reason to believe otherwise.

After averaging just 76 wins per season for the last 3 years, nothing better is expected of the Phillies after their consecutive 73 win seasons the last 2 years.  Through 10 games, the Philadelphia offense continues to be pathetic, averaging only 2.4 RPG, including 2.0 RPG in 4 games on the road.  O’Sullivan is certainly not the answer!  He did pitch a decent outing against Washington and Scherzer in this year’s first outing.  He allowed just 2 runs in 6 innings.  But, O’Sullivan has not won since 2012 as a member of the Royals.  Last year, in 3 appearances for the Phillies, he worked 12 2/3 IP, allowing 9 runs.  This is certainly not a pitcher on whom we can count, especially with our  MLB picks.

Washington was expected to be the best team in the National League.  After averaging 93 wins per season (96-66 last year), another 90 win season should be in the offing for the Nationals.  Keying the surge is one of the best rotations in baseball.  The Nationals got off to a dismal start at the plate, totaling just 17 runs in their first 7 games.  In the last 3 games, they have found their hitting shoes, as they have exploded for 22 runs.  That includes last night’s win vs. the Phillies by a score of 5-2.  As if Washington did not already have an embarrassment of riches with their rotation, they have now added Scherzer from Detroit.  Through 2 outings, including the 4-3 win vs. Philly on Saturday, Scherzer has worked 13 2/3 IP, allowing just one earned run on 10 hits with a 16/4 KBB.  That pitching line gives him a 0.66 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and .189 BAA.  All those numbers are reminiscent of his work in recent years with Detroit.

The cream will continue to rise to the top Friday night, as the Nationals 4-6 record still represents a gross underachievement.  Meanwhile, the Phillies are mired in what will be one of many 5-game losing streaks this year.  We play the MLB odds un line with the knowledge that 5 of the 7 Philly losses have already been by 2 or more runs this year, while the recent offensive resurgence of the Nationals has resulted in victories of 5 and 3 runs each of the last 2 nights.

MLB Picks: Take Washington Nationals -1.5, +101 on the run line at Pinnacle
