Kansas City Royals have cooled off somewhat recently but still remain in the thick of the wild-card race in the American League. Today they head to Chicago to take on the White Sox in what should be an interesting matchup. We are going to take a look at the total today for this game with two pitchers on the mound that might be just a bit underrated

Kansas City Royals
Yordano Ventura takes the mound with a 4.22 ERA and 1.37 whip but has allowed just 11 earned runs in his last six starts. On the road this season he's been a little bit worse than at home with a 4.32 ERA and batters hitting .255 against him. As well, against the White Sox he has not had much success allowing 10 earned runs over 20 innings pitched off of 20 hits in three games this season. However, the damage was mostly done in just one outing in which he allowed six earned in seven innings courtesy of two home runs. He has not faced this team since mid-June and recently he has been pitching extremely well allowing no more than three earned runs in his last 10 starts. He was great the other night versus Detroit at home and on a four-game road stretch just prior to that he was equally up to the task allowing just seven total earned runs in over 23 innings of work. I fully believe he can come in today and dominate. Kansas City has been hitting the ball out of their minds since the All-Star break and is coming off a few solid offenses outputs versus the Twins. Still, that should get tempered a little bit today as they face a pitcher who like Ventura, is pitching well.

Chicago White Sox
Carlos Rodon takes the mound for Chicago with a 3.90 ERA and 1.40 whip while allowing just eight earned runs in his last six starts. He is coming off his worst start in his most recent stretch of games at Minnesota where he allowed three earned runs off seven hits in seven innings. In his five previous starts to that, he was lights out allowing a total of just five earned runs in 30 innings of work. Versus Kansas City, he has been able to keep the damage to a minimum this season allowing five total earned runs in 17 innings in three starts not allowing more than two earned runs in any of those outings. He is pitching very well recently and I expect him to continue so today. Offensively the White Sox have been hot and cold  in their last five games scoring 13 and seven runs, and then garnering just three, three, and two. Ventura is simply not the same pitcher they saw prior to the All-Star break. Don't expect them to do a lot of damage today at the plate.

Odds makers have set this total at 8.5 across the board at most places. For my MLB pick, I'm going to back under the total of 8.5 like at Pinnacle sports -105. Although both of these teams can put up runs in a hurry at times they also can be limited on occasion. Expect for this game between two underrated pitchers to be a decent pitcher's duel.
