With the race for the Wild Card heating up, the Royals host the Yankees while both hang on for dear life. Today, both teams will want to knock the ball around. Our capper provides his insight and MLB pick.

Both the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals are hanging on for dear life to stay in the hunt for the wildcard in the American League. Today they meet in Kansas City and we are going to take a look at the total with two decent pitchers on the mound taking on two decently hot offenses. Can the Yankees and Royals score enough to fly over the total?

New York Yankees
Masahiro Tanaka takes the mound for the Yankees and is having a nice season with a 3.11 ERA and 1.07 whip as well as just a 2.09 ERA on the road. Batters are only hitting .234 against the Japanese right-hander in his road starts and New York has won eight out of the last 10 games he has started on the mound. Recently he has been lights out allowing zero earned runs off of just 11 hits in just over 14 innings of work. Both of those starts were on the road so one might think Tanaka will be able to continue this type of streak as he comes into Kansas City. However, he is facing not only one of the hottest teams in baseball but a team that has very different offensive numbers at home compared to on the road. On top of that is the fact the Royals knocked him around quite a bit in their only chance to face him garnering six earned runs in seven innings which included three home runs.

Offensively the Yankees have been on a tear but are coming off a shutout at the hands of Kevin Gausman and the Baltimore Orioles. I expect they will be able to get back on track today against a Kansas City starter that is seen his own struggles this season as well as even including getting shut out last game the Yankees are still averaging over five runs per game in their last 10 contests.

Kansas City Royals
Edinson Volquez is coming off his best start of the season allowing zero earned runs against the Miami Marlins in his five innings of work allowing just three hits. Overall he comes in with a 4.80 ERA and 1.44 whip but his home numbers are a little bit better with a 4.25 ERA. Still,  in KC batters are hitting .271 against him and in his last two home starts he has allowed eight earned runs in just 10 innings off of 16 hits versus the White Sox and the Twins. This could be a tough spot for him to come in and put up a lot of zeros on the board against a New York team that seems to be hitting their stride at the plate. Offensively the Royals are coming off of one of their best performances of the season scoring 10 runs in Boston where they won two out of three games.

They are the hottest team in baseball right now and offensively at home they are a completely different monster. Currently, the Royals average just four runs per game overall with an OPS of .713 both of which rank 26th in the major leagues. However, those numbers jump up to 4.70 runs per game and an OPS of .756 in Kansas City. Expect for the hottest team in baseball to keep rolling today at least enough offensively help get us over the total.

MLB odds
Oddsmakers have set the total for this game at 7.5 across the MLB odds board with regular juice on both sides. For my MLB pick, I'm going to back over the total like at 5Dimes -105. With the way Kansas City hits at home and New York's recent offensive surge this past month, I expect at least a couple more runs than this current total.
