In what will be his tuneup for the playoffs, Clayton Kershaw will be the MLB odds favorite for the 164th-straight time tonight when the Dodgers meet the Rockies at Coors Field.

One is the loneliest number, or so sang Three Dog Night nearly 50 years ago. As a magic number in clinching a spot in the MLB playoffs, however, there’s nothing lonely about one for the Colorado Rockies who could become the last team to punch a ticket for the postseason tonight when their series with the Los Angeles Dodgers continues.

Colorado cruised past LA on Friday, 9-1, behind four home runs and strong pitching from Chad Bettis in a contest 5Dimes closed the Rockies as +135 underdogs. The result left them needing just one more win, or a Milwaukee loss, to make the playoffs for just the fourth time ever, and first October appearance since ‘09. The 8:10 PM (ET) contest in Denver features Clayton Kershaw (18-4, 2.21) for the Dodgers against German Marquez (11-7, 4.38).

Marquez Making 2nd Start Vs. LA; Kershaw 6th Start Vs. Rocks

Kershaw looks to end his regular season with win No. 19, his time on the DL in August keeping him from what could’ve been the third 20-win campaign of his career. Getting to 19 in just 27 starts would still be a worthy accomplishment, and his string of MLB odds chalk grows to 164-straight games with tonight’s trip to the hill, at least once those numbers are released. Kershaw is 3-2 in five starts against the Rockies this season, 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA at Coors Field.

Kershaw’s 11.0 units of profit ranks fourth and Marquez isn’t too far behind at No. 15 (+7.3). His 4.60 home ERA might not look sexy, but it’s a decent number in 12 Mile High starts and the Rockies going 9-3 in those games is plenty-sexy for bettors. Control issues, as well as shoddy defense, led to the Venezuelan only working four innings against the Dodgers in LA earlier this month, his only start against them, and the end result was a Colorado victory.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Thirty previous plate assignments for Doug Eddings this year have produced a 17-11-2 O/U/P record on totals, and the Las Cruces native is seeing both Kershaw and Marquez for the second time with the previous games both going ‘over.’ Road chalk is in the red at 5-6 with the Rockies unbeaten in Eddings’ last five games behind the mask in Denver.

There is a 30%-40% chance of rain just before game time, and that delayed odds for this game. When they were released, we knew Kershaw and the Dodgers are set as substantial favorites but I’m looking more at the total for my free baseball pick with a play on the ‘under’.
