After allowing 18 runs in the first two games of the series, Boston turns to young Eduardo Rodriguez as a slight favorite on the MLB odds in Milwaukee against the Brewers.

Pitching failed the Boston Red Sox in their first two games against the high-powered Milwaukee Brewers, and they'll look to end a 6-game road trip on a high note in a Thursday getaway game at Miller Park (1:10 PM ET). Boston sends Eduardo Rodriguez to the bump for the series finale, the Red Sox priced -131at BetOnline. Jimmy Nelson goes for the Brewers with a 9 run total split evenly 'over' and 'under.'

A 5-run first inning helped the Brew Crew to an 11-7 triumph in Game 1, Boston closing around -125 on the MLB odds for that affair. Milwaukee used another big inning, this time a 4-run fifth to trigger a 7-4 victory last night as slight favorites. The losses dropped the Sox five games behind the Yankees and Orioles in the AL East race while the Brewers are hanging tough in a tightly-bunch NL Central fight.

Both Lineups Unfamiliar With Starting Pitchers

Four of Rodriguez's five starts have gone into the QS column, the one that failed to qualify coming in his season debut at Detroit. Control issues still plague the 24-year-old, but he's been able to work around a lot of that with 37 strikeouts in 29+ frames. This will be his first go at the Brewers with reserve infielder Nick Franklin the only Milwaukee batter to have faced him before. Rodriguez no-decisioned in his two interleague starts this season but pitched well and the Red Sox beat both the Pirates and Cubs.

A rain delay forced Nelson from his last start in Pittsburgh after three shutout innings, and the Brewers were unable to pick him up after that as the team eventually lost its fourth straight with the former 'Bama star on the hill. Nelson didn't pitch well in the previous three assignments, hasn't logged a quality start since his first two of the year and opponents are batting .313 against him at Miller Park in three appearances. Like Rodriguez against the Brew Crew, this is his first appearance vs. Boston.

Umpire Notes, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

CB Bucknor has been missing from Fieldin Culbreth's crew for the first two games of this series, and assuming he doesn't return for Thursday's tilt, his replacement, Ben May, will call balls and strikes this afternoon. The part-timer is in his fourth season as a fill-in, and his first two plate assignments this season split the totals. The Racine, Wisconsin native has been at the dish four times in Milwaukee, the Brewers and the totals halving those games.

The roof was shut for the first two games of the set, but those were at night and they could open things up this afternoon with temps close to 60º and a light NE breeze (3B to 1B). My free baseball pick is a bet against the sweep as much as it is a play on the BoSox.
