Oakland is just 1-6 against left-handed starters this season, including 0-5 at home, and those trends should continue today when visiting Boston sends David Price to the mound.

The Boston Red Sox are off to a white-hot start (17-3) despite Saturday’s 3-0 loss to the Oakland Athletics (9-11). The Sox lead almost every offensive category including runs per game (6.47), batting average (.293), and OPS (.858). Add in a team ERA of 2.64 and you come up with the second-best record that any team has had through 19 games with the 1918 New York Giants being the exception (18-1). Today's starting pitchers are Boston's David Price (2-1, 2.25 ERA) against Daniel Mengden (2-2, 4.50).

On the MLB odds board Boston opened as a reasonable -131 favorite. There is little doubt that they will all need the Athletics to come up big because the public has already scoffed at this number, pushing it up to -147. In the Red Sox's 10 games prior to Saturday, only the three-game series against Baltimore provided a number that is beyond my -150 threshold. The other seven were -136 and below including a -169 including three plus money chances over that period. Boston is the best team in baseball right now but are not being priced that way, enjoy it while it last.

The total sits at 8.5, bet down from an opening number of 9.

The Sox showed off their depth Friday when J.D. Martinez was given the night off. Mitch Moreland stepped up and crushed a grand slam in a 7-3 win in a place where they haven’t found much success. Over their last 39 games in Oakland, Boston has lost 27 of those games. However, this is a different Red Sox team.

With a minimum of nine games played, Boston has seven players with an average of .281 or better. By comparison, Oakland has just four. This is the best start in Boston’s 118-year history, winners of 17 of 18 since dropping an opening day game to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Martinez has been baseball’s hottest hitter over the last couple of weeks with a .591 average (13-22). He’ll be back in the lineup today for an offense that had scored 34 runs over their four games before Saturday. In addition to the Sox offense, Boston’s bullpen is 5-1 with a 3.31 ERA (11th) to support starting pitching that sits at a sparkling 12-1, 2.17 ERA.

There is no reason to go against Boston with your MLB picks.
