Boston owns one of the most potent offenses while Texas has one of the worst pitching staffs, and we have a free baseball pick for their series opener on Thursday.

Boston Red Sox vs Texas Rangers

Free MLB Pick: Rangers +141
Best Line Offered: at 5Dimes

No team has played better baseball than the Boston Red Sox, especially on the road where they are 11-4. Still, they can’t seem to pull away from their New York rivals in the AL East, and that record away from Fenway will be tested the next week-&-a-half when they start a 10-game road trip Friday in Texas against the Rangers.

First pitch is 8:05 PM (ET), Mike Minor (2-1, 4.33) having the honors of delivering it for a Rangers staff that has allowed the most runs in the majors. Boston, meanwhile, has scored the 2nd-most runs – Do you see where this is headed? – and will send David Price (2-3, 3.78) to the bump as a -145 favorite at YouWager where a 9½-run total leans to the ‘under.’

Sox Seeing Minor For 1st Time In 4 Years

Price is coming off his worst start of 2018, the Rays reaching him for six runs before chasing him in the sixth of a 12-6 loss. It was the third time in four weeks that Tampa Bay hitters had seen him, so maybe that was part of the problem. He’ll be pitching in a park he owns a 6.74 ERA over eight starts and a relief outing, that bullpen appearance coming in the 2015 playoffs. Still, despite that bloated ERA, Price is 5-2 with his teams 7-2 in those nine games.

It was originally thought that Minor would pitch out of the bullpen, but the Rangers have instead used the oft-injured hurler in the rotation and babied him with extra rest between starts. Minor picked up his second win last Friday in Toronto where he was a +135 underdog on the MLB odds, going six frames and allowing four runs. It’s his first start against Boston since 2014 when he tossed a 7-inning gem at Fenway, and Hanley Ramirez’s 3-for-10 career stats with a homer represents the most any hitter in the Red Sox lineup has seen Minor.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

This has been a pretty level series since the rebirth of the Washington Senators moved to Texas in 1972, the Red Sox holding a slight 235-226 advantage over the Rangers the past 46 seasons. Boston dominated matters last year, however, winning five of the six matchups and outscoring Texas 46-29 in the battles. The Rangers’ lone victory did come at home with the ‘over’ cashing five of the last six clashes in Arlington.

There are thunderstorms all over the DFW area and one could delay or interrupt tonight’s contest. The prevailing wind at the Ballpark That Dubya Built will be from the south with muggy temps in the mid-to-upper 70s. The ‘over’ might be the smartest play here, but my free baseball pick will be on the home ‘dogs.
