Our MLB handicapper, Mark Lathrop, scans the transaction wire and spots a few teams that have made moves that will affect either their performance or public perception throughout August. Read on as he lines up the teams having the most impactful moves this last week.https://www.sportsbookreview.com/picks/mlb/

Rosters are ever changing in the world of major league baseball, and this season is no different. Here I’m going to look at some roster moves that will affect public perception of the following teams, and possibly performance, as the season continues through the month of August which should affect lines for our MLB picks.

Marlins Banged up and Out of Contention:

Miami had to put slugger Justin Bour and starting shortstop JT Riddle on the DL today, with Bour’s absence being the most critical. The Marlins are out of the playoff contention and will plug in a replacement level player at 1B, but Mike Aviles takes over for Riddle and I’ll call that a wash for now. Bour’s 21 home runs in the lineup will be missed, so I’d look at fading this team when they start calling up youngsters to start as they won’t be able to give them as much run support as previously.

Arizona’s Bullpen and Lineup gets a Boost:

The Tigers gave up JD Martinez to the Diamondbacks for far too little in my opinion, as the slugger made his presence known on Wednesday with a sweet dinger of his own. Arizona is 12 games back of the Dodgers, but still hold the 2nd best run differential in the league. An important cog came back to the bullpen as well with Rubby de la Rosa returning from the DL. Out of the bullpen de la Rosa throws a 96.8 mph average fastball, so he has a great chance of being effective and shoring up some uncertainty with Fernando Rodney as the closer.

Nunez and Devers a Massive Upgrade at 3B for Red Sox:

With the Pablo Sandoval experiment now over, the Red Sox have called up wunderkind Rafael Devers and traded for Eduardo Nunez as options for third base. Nunez plays fantastic defense and his first MLB hit was a home run in Seattle. Nunez has been nothing short of one of the hottest batters in the MLB since June. Either player is a huge upgrade to Sandoval, but beware that the public knows this too and may assign too much value to the new editions. Consider the Red Sox a ‘square’ play as August rolls on.

Kershaw and McCarty Go Down for the Dodgers:

If Arizona had a reason to be buyers this year, this would be it. The Dodgers just lost two of their starters to the DL, and it can be argued that no starter has been has valuable as Clayton Kershaw has been to the Dodgers this year. Yu Darvish is a trade candidate that has been named to fill a rotation spot, but I don’t know how well he will do switching to the National League. What I’m looking for is a situation in which the Dodgers adjust their excellent bullpen to shore up the rotation. If that happens the efficiency of the bullpen could be compromised.

Cahill and Maurer to Royals for a Run:

The Royals are also buyers this year as the AL Central has played out very tight through July. The Indians were far and away the better team in the division to start the year, but getting Cahill and Maurer from the Padres bring interesting pieces to the rotation and bullpen of the Royals to go with their currently hot bats. I’m expecting this to become a two-team race with the Tigers moving pieces, so look for the Royals and Indians to start creating some distance as the season moves on.
