The New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays end their three-game series at Tropicana Field on Wednesday. The Yankees are at -120 on the MLB odds board while the Rays are at +111 and the total has been set at 7.5.

New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays

New York Yankees

The Yankees lost their sixth consecutive season opener, 7-3, with Masahiro Tanaka giving up a career-worst seven earned runs in 2.2 innings, which matched the shortest start by a Yankees' starter on Opening Day. Starlin Castro and Chase Headley each had three hits and Aaron Judge collected an RBI double in the setback.
As of this writing, the Yankees rank 17th in the majors with three runs scored, 15th with a .250 batting average and 22nd with zero home runs. New York is 26th in MLB with a 7.88 ERA and 26th with a 2.00 WHIP.

Tampa Bay Rays

Chris Archer was dominant on Opening Day, allowing just two earned runs with five strikeouts over seven innings for the Rays, while Evan Longoria and Logan Morrison homered and drove in three runs each.

The Rays currently rank 5th in the majors with seven runs scored, 2nd with a .361 batting average and 9th with two home runs. Tampa Bay is 8th in MLB with a 2.00 ERA and 10th with a 1.11 WHIP.

Pitching Matchup
Michael Pineda (6-12, 4.82 ERA in 2016) vs. Alex Cobb (1-2, 8.59 ERA in 2016)

Michael Pineda went 6-12 with a 4.82 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP with 207 strikeouts and 53 walks in 32 starts last season. He will be a free agent after this season and the Yankees need him to put it all together. Pineda set career-highs with 175.2 innings, 32 starts and 207 strikeouts. The problem was that his 12 losses and 27 home runs allowed were also the most in his career.

Alex Cobb was just 1-2 with a high 8.59 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP with 16 strikeouts and seven walks in just 22 innings over five starts. Cobb came back from Tommy John surgery and he worked on his mechanics in the offseason. His changeup is impressive and if healthy, he is one of the most promising starters in the majors and he can help the Rays significantly.

Betting Trends

The Yankees are 1-5 in their last six road games, 16-23 in games played on artificial turf over the last three seasons and 78-85 in road games over the last three seasons.

The Rays are 4-2 in their last six games and 79-86 in games played in a dome over the last three seasons.

Final Analysis

Michael Pineda was a mess last season and it's hard for me to understand why the Yankees made him their number 3 starter. Pineda was 0-3 with a 7.30 ERA in five starts against the Rays last season, giving up eight home runs in 24.2 innings and he went 2-7 with a 4.91 ERA in 16 road starts last year. The Rays know they can get to him and Cobb should be ready to bring his best stuff. At +111 on the MLB odds board I have to take the Rays with my MLB picks.
