For today’s MLB pick backing the underdog, I focus on the Chicago Cubs as they take on the San Diego Padres, with Tsuyoshi and Wada as the starting pitchers.

Su Yo Shi
Tsuyoshi (pronounced su yo shi… actually it’s tsu but hard for Americans to say) Wada takes the mound for the Cubs with Tyson Ross going for the Padres.  MLB betting odds makers have come out making the Cubs around a +115 underdog which seems a bit low with Wada making his first start of the year.  Ross comes in with a 3.94 ERA and 1.53 WHIP, but he is better than those numbers with his career numbers at 3.72 and 1.34.  He is coming off a good outing against the Nationals in which allowed two earned runs in five innings.  For me the value MLB pick here is on Wada.  He comes in with a career 3.25 ERA and 1.25 WHIP but in only 13 total games pitched in the majors.  I am very familiar with Wada and his time spent in Japan.  He was one of the top pitchers in the Japan Professional baseball league for several years.  He doesn’t throw very hard which is why he was overlooked for years, but he is very similar to a Tom Glavine type of pitcher and has great off speed stuff and very good location.

Statistically both the Padres and the Cubs are decent this year and are pretty even overall.  The Padres are hitting .251 as a team, the Cubs .249, the Padres are ranked 8th in runs per game, the Cubs 13th, and the Padres rank 16th in slugging, the Cubs 19th.  Not a lot of difference there, but the Cubs are ranked 6th in the league in on base percentage with the Padres ranked 22nd.

Take advantage of the good value on a pitcher that can really be tough to face.  Wada throws strikes and keeps hitters off balance, he gives the Cubs a very good chance to win this game.
