Back on the mound where he cut his teeth as a major-league pitcher, David Price is favored on the MLB odds Friday evening when Boston visits Tampa Bay.

Thanks to six innings of shutout baseball from Chris Sale, the Boston Red Sox were cruising towards an Opening Day win at Tampa Bay. Or, at least they appeared to be. The wheels came off their cruiser in the eighth inning when a pair of Boston relievers couldn’t find the plate, and the Rays rallied for all of their runs in a 6-4 win as decided underdogs.

Boston now looks to even their season record Friday night (7:10 ET) with former Tampa Bay star David Price on the bump at The Trop, the Red Sox going off as -141 chalk at 5Dimes. Fellow southpaw Blake Snell takes the ball for Kevin Cash and the Rays, scoreboard punters looking at 7½ for their target.

Snell 1-3 In 4 Lifetime Starts Vs. Boston

Injuries limited Price to less than 75 innings in his second season with the Red Sox, and he finished the year pitching out of the Boston bullpen where, including the playoffs, he tossed 15.1 scoreless innings. Price only got in three official spring appearances, but looked back to form with 13 strikeouts in 12 innings while holding hitters to a .132 average. This will be his fourth start in St. Pete since donning a BoSox jersey, Price 1-1 with a no-decision in the others while posting a 2.65 ERA (20.1 IP).

Picked by most to bring up the rear of the AL East this time around, Thursday’s win was definitely a great start for the Rays. Snell would like to keep the good times rolling early, as well as build off a strong close to the 2017 season. The 25-year-old helped Tampa Bay to eight wins over his final 11 starts, good enough for a 5-unit return against MLB money lines, and pitched to a sub 3.00 ERA over that stretch. The lanky lefty followed that up with a very strong spring, posting a 3.12 ERA in five starts and whiffing 27 in just over 17 frames. Snell had a 3.32 ERA in 11 home starts last season, but lost both assignments vs. the Red Sox.

Umpire Notes, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

Veteran Laz Diaz should don the mask to call balls and strikes in this one, and he is coming off consecutive seasons with only a slight lean to the ‘under’ (27-31-6 O/U/P). The Florida native had the plate at Tropicana Field twice in 2017, and both contests went ‘over,’ including a while 13-6 Red Sox victory that went 15 innings.

Counting on a bounce-back season for Price and Boston relievers putting their Opening Day implosion behind them, my free MLB pick is the Red Sox on the run line.
