Mets and Rays begin Inter-league Series on Friday
The Rays and Mets are set to start a three game weekend series today at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. The first pitch is slated for 7:10 PM ET. The Mets are currently atop the NL East standings with a 1.5 game lead over second place Washington. Tampa Bay is still very much in the discussion pertaining to an American League wild card spot. The Rays are currently 3.5 games behind Toronto for that final postseason berth.
Jacob DeGrom has been an absolute bear for the Mets this season. The young right-hander has been especially dominant over his previous four starts, posting a superb 1.30 ERA, 0.61 WHIP, and a better than 8:1 strikeout to walk ratio. DeGrom has a stellar 2015 resume in which he’s compiled a 2.09 ERA and 0.89 WHIP during twenty starts.
Jake Odorizzi will get the starting assignment for Tampa Bay today. The unheralded right-hander has an excellent 1.41 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in seven home starts this year. Odorizzi has walked just 1 in each of his previous two starts. You would think that would be a good sign, but not so fast. Odorizzi is 1-8 in his team starts since 2013 after walking 1 or less in each of his previous two outings.
The New York Mets enter this inter-league series having won six in a row and nine of their previous eleven games. They’ve struggled this season in producing any type of consistent offensive production. However, that hasn’t been the case of late. The Mets are averaging a healthy 6.0 runs per outing over their previous seven games. When the sportsbooks install the Mets as a money line favorite of -110 or more, they’ve certainly been spot on. The Mets are a spectacular 44-13 this season as a money line favorite of -110 or more.
