Though we lost our MLB pick yesterday, tonight we bounce right back with the same Seattle Mariners as they visit Philadelphia in the continuation of this early week set.

Joe Gavazzi’s 10* MLB Run Line Massacre

Seattle (Iwakuma) -1 ½ +110 vs. Philladelphia (Burnett) 7:05 OM EST
We lost this matchup last night, when Philly retread starter, Williams, pitched an outstanding game in leading the home team to a 4-1 win. Williams entered the game with a 9.90 ERA and 2.10 WHIP allowing 13 runs in his previous 3 games spanning 15 1/3 IP. Last night, Williams allowed just 1 run and 3 hits in 7-plus innings. Williams credited his new catcher, Carlos Ruiz, with the improvements. Seattle had won 12 of its previous 16 games. With the defeat the Mariners fell into a tie with Detroit for the 2nd wildcard spot in the AL. Seattle continues to seek their first post-season party invitation since 2001.

Seattle is playing far better ball than is Philadelphia right now. They have been led by outstanding pitching numbers, which have resulted in an ERA of less than 2.00 in August. Currently Seattle is battling Detroit for the 2nd wild card. With a 67-57 record, Seattle is even with Detroit. The recent Seattle runs have totaled 40-27 and 10-3. That is quite dichotomous to Philadelphia’s recent streak, which shows the Phillies to be 34-49 following their 22-21 beginning.

The pitching matchup is in our favor as well. For the year to date Philly has won just 10 of 26 Burnett starts. Burnett has clearly run out of gas since the all-star break. Philly has failed to win any of those 6 starts by Burnett. In 31 2/3 IP Burnett has allowed 27 runs and 41 hits. For the Mariners, Iwakuma has been the opposite end of the spectrum. In his 2 most recent trips to the mound Iwakuma has worked 13 2/3 IP allowing just one run on 10 hits with an 8/1 KBB. Furthermore Iwakuma has pitched his best baseball on the road of late. In four recent starts away from home Iwakuma has recorded a 1.95 ERA.

We line up with a hotter team and the better pitcher knowing the following factors about the run line results for these two teams. For Seattle 26 out of 33 road wins have come by two or more runs for Philadelphia 26 out of 36 home losses have come by 2 or more runs. For your MLB pick today, play the runs and take the short price in this run line massacre.
