Place Your Pick on the 'Under' for Yankees vs. Orioles Game 3

Their MLB odds series in Baltimore shortened to two games following Tuesday's rainout, the New York Yankees send Michael Pineda to the mound tonight looking for a split.

Steady rain forced the cancellation of Tuesday's second game between the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles, so we'll never know if we had a winner on the 'over'.  The good news is all the wet stuff has cleared out of the Baltimore area to leave clear skies for Wednesday's matchup.

Both teams are sticking to their original rotation plans, meaning Michael Pineda matches up against Chris Tillman in the finale that airs on ESPN beginning at 7 PM (ET). Tillman and the O's are going off in the -130s on the current MLB odds, and 8.5 run total also on the baseball betting card.

Tillman Looks To Build On Good Start To August
I wonder what the over/under is on the number of times "pine tar" gets yelled in Pineda's general direction tonight. Pineda is making his first appearance on a major league mound since being ejected in a contest at Fenway Park on April 23 for having a foreign substance (pine tar) on his neck. The big Dominican has spent most of his time nursing a sore back since then, making two rehab starts in the past couple of weeks with strong results (7.2 IP, 1 ER, 11 K's).

Pineda will be facing the O's for the first time since his 2011 rookie season, both of those contests going into Seattle's loss column despite the righthander pitching to a 2.77 ERA.

Tillman has won both of his August assignments with strong efforts vs. Seattle and St. Louis. He beat the Yankees on their turf 22 with seven shutout frames, but lost his follw-up start just before the All-Star Game in Baltimore when Shane Greene and the NY bullpen blanked the Orioles, 3-0. Lifetime against the pinstripes, Tillman is 5-5 with a 5.63 ERA.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick
The two clubs are skipping Tuesday's starting pitchers after the rainout, but that doesn't mean the umpires are doing the same with their rotation. Gerry Davis was the scheduled plate umpire yesterday, and could still get the call on Wednesday. If not, it will be Greg Gibson behind the mask for the series finale, bringing an 11-11-2 (O/U/P) record into the matchup. The Ohio native's lone appearance in Baltimore this season failed to reach the total, leaving 'under' bettors happy in six of Gibson's last eight plate assignments at Oriole Park.

Cooler temps are in the offing following yesterday's rain, most of the contest slated to be played in the low-to-mid 70s along with 8-12 mph NW winds (in from left). That could help all of the pitchers, but I'm more concerned with just how long New York manager Joe Girardi will leave Pineda on the mound. My guess is 75 pitches tops before the game gets turned over to the bullpen. Put me down for a free pick on the 'under'.
