For Friday baseball we head to Pittsburgh for some interleague action as the Pirates take on the New York Yankees, who have come out swinging the bats really well this year. All the while, Pittsburgh lost one of their best players controversially.

New York Yankees

CC Sabathia takes the mound for New York and comes in with a 1.47 ERA and 1.04 whip in three games so far this season. You know what you to get from him, a solid veteran on the mound who’s going to give you an opportunity to win ball games. I expect him to come in and be steady enough against a Pittsburgh team that is struggling at the plate. For New York offensively they have been swinging the bats extremely well hitting .264 as a team and ranking in the top five across the league in most offensive categories. Currently, New York ranks second in OPS, runs per game, and more impressively to me, walks per game. This should come into play tonight being able to get free passes as tonight’s starter for Pittsburgh tends to give them up in bunches. Oddsmakers have made this game close to even money but I think the value here lies with New York.

 Pittsburgh Pirates

With the recent suspension of one of their stars, Pittsburgh has reeled off three straight losses after surprisingly sweeping the world champion Cubs. Tonight things don’t get much easier for the Pirates against a New York team that has been playing good baseball and has one of the best bullpens in the major leagues, but with them being at home it makes a little bit of sense for this line to be close. Getting the start for Pittsburgh is Tyler Glasnow and he comes in really struggling so far this season with a 12.15 ERA and 2.55 whip. The biggest issue for him has been the fact he’s allowing too many base runners and has already walked seven in six innings pitched over two starts. This could spell disaster for him tonight against a New York team that is swinging the bats as well as anybody in baseball right now. At the plate Pittsburgh ranks in the bottom third of the league in most categories and are hitting just .229 on the season. To their advantage they do not strike out very much but I think value wise until they start playing some better baseball they are a decent fade.

 MLB Odds

New York opened as a -108 favorite and for my MLB pick, I will back them in this spot. This is a pretty good value on the Yankees team that is come out of the gates playing good baseball along with having a good veteran on the mound. Expect Pittsburgh to lose their fourth in a row.
