Sunday Night Baseball features a couple of disappointing clubs from the NL Central, and we have a free MLB pick for the series finale between the Pirates and Cardinals.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs St. Louis Cardinals

A chance for just their second sweep on the road this season awaits the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight when they finish their weekend series in St. Louis against the Cardinals. ESPN begins its coverage of the game at 8 PM (ET) as Chad Kuhl (2-6, 5.46) takes the mound for the Pirates opposite Mike Leake (5-6, 3.03) of the Cards. St. Louis is carrying around -140 chalk with 8½ for the total.

John Jaso’s solo shot in the top of the ninth lifted Pittsburgh to a 4-3 victory in Friday’s series opener in a tightly-lined contest that Bookmaker closed -109 in favor of St. Louis. The upset stopped a 7-game home win streak in the rivalry for the Cardinals, and the Bucs made it two in a row Saturday with a 7-3 triumph that halted a string of 4-straight ‘under’ winners in the rivalry this season.

Leake, Kuhl In Rematch Of 2-1 Pitchers Duel

Kuhl picked up just his second win in 14 starts this past Tuesday in Milwaukee, allowing two runs in his five innings of work that halted a 4-game losing streak for Pittsburgh with him on the mound. He tied his season high with six strikeouts but hasn’t gone past the fifth now since April 18 when he took a tough 2-1 setback against Leake in St. Louis. That loss left him 0-2 with a 4.84 ERA in three career assignments vs. the Cards.

Leake also stopped a 4-game losing skid in his last start, firing six innings of 1-run baseball in Philadelphia where the Redbirds were -145 chalk on the MLB odds. He was on the winning end of that April 18 contest against Kuhl and the Bucs, and has historically performed very well against Pittsburgh with a 3.29 ERA in 29 assignments. Former Cardinal David Freese, however, has historically been very good against Leake, batting .516 (16-31) over the years.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Now in just his first full season umping at the major league level, Chad Whitson is in line to work the plate for the series finale. The Ohio native trends to the high side of totals this year with a 7-4 O/U record, and has become a home team favorite with all 11 of his games behind the dish going that direction, including a perfect 8-0 as the favorite. Sunday night marks his first plate assignment at Busch Stadium.

It should be a lovely day in St. Louis with sunny skies and the thermometer dropping into the 70s at game time with a 10-13 mph NW breeze blowing from left to right. I’ll play the ‘under’ for my free baseball pick.

My pick: Pirates-Cardinals Under 8½ (-105) Best Available Lines: at 5Dimes

Season: 37-43 (-6.44)
