If you like offense, then a Pirates-Rockies series in Denver is just for you, and their Saturday evening encounter includes the highest total on the baseball betting card.

The Colorado Rockies still have a comfortable lead for the second NL Wild Card spot, but manager Bud Black knows how quickly it could vanish, especially after losing Friday to the Pittsburgh Pirates, one of the teams chasing them. Colorado looks to even the series tonight in a rematch from nearly six weeks ago; Chad Kuhl (3-6, 4.85) is up for the Pirates opposite German Marquez (7-4, 4.34), the Rockies -126 at 5Dimes and an even dozen for the total.

Josh Bell’s 4-hit, 4-RBI evening fueled Pittsburgh’s lineup Friday in a 13-5 decision that came with the Pirates +115 underdogs on the MLB odds. The victory extended their recent dominance in the rivalry, giving the Bucs 15 wins in the past 19 matchups. The clubs have combined for 151 runs the last 12 games in Denver (7-5 O/U).

Both Hurlers In Winning Grooves
Kuhl is making his third road start in the last four outings, and fifth in the last seven. Pittsburgh has won his last three assignments, the most recent two coming against division rivals Chicago and Milwaukee, and the former Delaware star is sporting a nifty 2.49 ERA in July. Walks have been an issue, though, with nine during his last 14+ frames, and Kuhl struggled in a loss to the Rockies at PNC Park in mid-June (5 IP, 3 ER). Saturday will be his first career appearance at Coors Field.

Marquez has picked up the dubya his last two times out, each a quality start at hitter-friendly Coors. His struggles have mainly come against NL West opponents, the Rockies 2-5 in those contests while going 7-1 when Marquez faces teams from other divisions. He beat Kuhl in Pittsburgh on June 14, working five innings of 1-run baseball, his first and only matchup against the Pirates in his brief career.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick
Cowboy Joe West’s crew is working this series, and it’s Chad Fairchild’s turn to call balls and strikes. The Sandusky, OH native is leaning towards visitors and the ‘under’ this season, each of those results cashing 11 of his 18 plate assignments. His last four games behind the mask in Denver, however, have run 3-0-1 O/U/P.

A few clouds and a bit humid by Mile High City standars is the forecast for game time, temps in the low-80s then and a light NNW breeze (in from left-center). The ;over' is inviting, but I’m playing the more prolific series trend with my free baseball pick on the Buccos.

My pick: Pirates (+121) Best Lines at 5Dimes
