Our expert handicapper, Mark Lathrop, can't wait for Sunday Night Baseball to start. It's not often that he gets a chance to see a lineup perfect to take advantage of an opposing pitcher.

Chicago Cubs vs. Boston Red Sox

One of the best offenses in the MLB in the Chicago Cubs tries to take their interleague series in Boston on Sunday Night Baseball. The Cubs match up against a starter who has struggled at home in Fenway in his career.

I really like this matchup for the Cubs after looking at the splits for Boston starter, Eduardo Rodriguez. He is below average at home, putting up a 4.71 ERA over 122.1 innings pitched versus an away ERA of 3.64 in 123.2 innings pitched. The other thing that will give him trouble on Sunday night is his performance against left-handed hitting. On his short career, Rodriguez is allowing lefties to bat .271 against him with a .454 slugging percentage. Looking at the potential lineup of the Cubs, they will have at least 6 left handed batters going against him – Jason Heyward, Jon Jay, and Kyle Schwarber in the outfield, Anthony Rizzo and Ben Zobrist in the infield, and Miguel Montero behind the plate. It is very likely that the Cubs get up early on the youngster.

Pitching for the Cubs is Kyle Hendricks. He’s had a bit of a rough start to his season but put it all together in his last game where he twirled six innings of shutout baseball against the Pittsburgh Pirates on the road. I don’t expect that kind of performance to repeat itself, but in the prospect of a high scoring game, I will give one of the MLB-leading teams in runs the advantage. I’ll be taking the Cubs at a reasonable -105 and also Over 9 runs for this Sunday Night Baseball pick.

Minnesota Twins vs. Kansas City Royals

Only a rain delay could delay Kansas City’s losing streak from reaching 9 games, as the Royals are playing their way out of contention early in the season this year.

The Royals offense has been terrible this year, with just 58 runs scored through 22 games played. That’s last in the major leagues by far, as is their .205 team batting average. To make things worse they are not taking walks either, putting up a putrid 7.1% walk rate as compared to a 22.3% strikeout rate at the plate.

Phil Hughes gets the start for the Twins and he must be licking his chops to face the Royals here. Hughes is 3-1 on the season and has put up a 4.34 FIP over 21 innings pitched. He’s had some better luck limiting home runs so far this season but seeing that he is going up against a limp Kansas City lineup that won’t be much of a factor. This is one of my rare momentum plays, but the Royals need to be faded until they can prove otherwise. Take the Twins at +111 on the road as another Sunday MLB Pick.
