With 3 weeks left in the regular season our MLB handicapper has guaranteed a winning pick record on the season. Follow Mark Lathrop as he looks to finish up September with even more units as he makes his Friday MLB Picks of the Day.

Milwaukee Brewers vs Chicago Cubs

An elite pitcher finds himself an underdog once again with Jimmy Nelson of the Brewers. Our MLB handicapper finds no reasons to not take the plus odds yet again by backing him.

Jimmy Nelson should not be an underdog this season. Ever. We backed him when he beat the Dodgers as an underdog a few weeks ago and we will back him again here. Nelson has one of the top FIP’s in the MLB over the entire season at 3.05. He’s having an excellent second half of the season as well with a 74/19 K/BB rate, .249 BAA, 1.26 WHIP, and 2.86 FIP. Nelson has given up only 3 earned runs or less in 21 of his 28 starts this year, and over 4 earned runs in just 3 starts on the season.

On the other hand, 38-year old John Lackey is carrying the worst FIP of his career this season at 5.31. He has a 18.8% HR/FB rate hasn’t been able to get lefties out with a .282 BAA against southpaws on the year. Lackey is 1-1 against the Brewers this year, with a 2-run start and a 4-run start, but he gave up home runs in each. And again, Jimmy Nelson. I’ll take Nelson and the Brewers on the first 5 inning line as a Friday MLB picks.

Colorado Rockies vs L.A. Dodgers

After the opening line has shifted greatly in favor of the Rockies, our MLB handicapper easily spots why we are ok tailing the early steam against the home town Dodgers.

German Marquez has good overall numbers over the entire season, but his numbers on the road are borderline fantastic. Away from Coors Field this year, Marquez has given up just 6 home runs over 63 innings pitched and has an excellent 3.75 FIP. He pitches to more fly ball contact on the road than at home. I can’t say that I can argue with the logic in that approach and it is working for him.

The Dodgers put Yu Darvish on the mound in this game, and the 8-11 pitcher has steep chalk on him once again. He lost outright in his previous two games as a -195 and -270 moneyline favorite. Darvish has not had a good second half of the season and has allowed a .287 BAA over that time with a 4.74 WHIP. He has never faced Colorado, yet he found himself opening as a -234 moneyline favorite. That line has moved down to -185 as of Thursday night. I’ll buy a little insurance and take the Rockies on the run line at almost even money at 5Dimes as one of my Friday MLB Picks of the Day.
