Entering in the final week of the season our MLB handicapper, Mark Lathrop has been blistering hot in the month of September. He finds us two Friday night specials to wager on in his MLB Picks of the Day.

L.A. Dodgers vs Colorado Rockies

With two pitchers headed into Coors Field in spots that we can’t trust, our MLB handicapper turns to a rare call for him in this game between the Rockies and Dodgers.

It’s been a pretty good system so far to back the Under in inflated totals listed for Coors Field with pitchers that can keep the ball on the ground. That won’t be the case here and we will be changing our tune. Chad Bettis get the start for the Rockies and his ground ball rate is the lowest it has been in his career. He’s got a 5.32 FIP to show for it over 39.1 innings pitched and a 1-4 record. His HR/FB rate is also at a career high of 17.4%. Bettis has started against the Dodgers three times over the last calendar year with a 6.32 ERA and 1.78 WHIP.

Hyun-Jin Ryu starts this game for the Dodgers, and the Rockies lineup should be able to give him fits. Ryu is the owner of a .320 BAA split against left-handers. Turns out that the Rockies can put no less than 5 quality lefties into their lineup at any given time, and their righties are Nolan Arenado, Mark Reynolds, and Trevor Story (88 combined HR’s). This is a situation similar to the one in Seattle, just from the other side of the plate. If Colorado’s lefties find success the stars will get them home. It is Fan Appreciation night at Coors Field so expect the full lineup to be playing.  However, with Bettis not in a good matchup as well, I will be turning to the Over to fade both pitchers as one of my Friday MLB Picks of the Day.

Seattle Mariners vs L.A. Angels

The Mariners traded away their best AAA bat for Marco Gonzales earlier in the year. Of course, he has stunk up the joint leading to our MLB handicapper taking the personal revenge angle here.

Marco Gonzales is an AAA pitcher and shouldn’t be on a major league roster. However, the Mariners rotation hasn’t been of MLB caliber all year so he fits right in. Gonzales allows a robust .350 BAA, carries a 4.91 FIP, and 18.4% HR/FB rate. Splits from both sides of the plate are bad, with a .342 BAA against lefties and .353 BAA against righties. On the road, Gonzales has put up a 7.50 ERA and a .444 OBP. He’s going to get hammered tonight.

Tyler Skaggs is an average MLB pitcher that won’t need to do anything special to win this game. For the Angels this year he has put up a 4.45 FIP over 80.1 innings pitched. He faced the Mariners on the road earlier in the year and put up 6.1 innings of shutout ball in a no-decision. I believe his second-half numbers are skewed negatively by the fact that he has faced either the Houston or Cleveland lineup in 4 of his last 6 starts. He will hold his own here and the Angels should cruise to an easy run line win.
