San Diego Padres vs L.A. Dodgers

Our MLB handicapper spots a game in which season-long results have driven the books to put out a total that is not reflective of how the starters are faring lately. He breaks down the matchup and gives us a total pick as the Dodgers host the Padres.

Alex Wood’s velocity problems have continued as the season has worn on, and in his last start his average fastball came in at 90.3 mph versus the start of the year at 94.3. His results have faded along with his velocity, and Wood has put up a subpar 4.49 FIP in the second half of the season. His strikeout rates have also plummeted with his K/9 rate dropping from 10.82 to 7.26 from the first half to the second half of the season. He pitched against San Diego earlier this month and gave up 4 earned runs and 2 home runs in a loss.

Wood will go up against rookie Dinelson Lamet of the Padres, who has put up a 4.24 FIP on the season over 109.1 innings pitched. I would like Lamet against Wood on the side in this game except for one thing; he struggles against left-handed batters with a .260 BAA and .500 SLG against. The Dodgers can stack that side of the plate with their lineup, so the prospect of them scoring more than 3 runs here is high. With a total sitting at 7.5 runs for now I will definitely be taking the Over as one of my Tuesday MLB Picks of the Day.

San Francisco Giants vs Arizona Diamondbacks

With the Arizona Diamondbacks resting offensive stars on Monday night against the Giants, our handicapper expects a full-strength lineup on Tuesday to match the advantage they have on the mound.

Matt Moore of the San Francisco Giants has stayed healthy all year. The good things about his season end with that statement, as his 6-14 record indicates. His walk rates are up and his strikeout rates are down and he has put up a 4.63 FIP on the season. Moore can’t get left handers out and they’ve hammered him to the tune of a .361 BAA and .621 SLG on the year. I can’t imagine that the Diamondbacks won’t be able to take advantage of that split in this game.

Heading up the Diamondbacks is strikeout specialist, Robbie Ray. His 12.28 K/9 rate is elite, although his BB/9 rate of 4.00 has a lot to be desired. With San Francisco having one of the worst offenses in the league; however, I expect that he will be able to be aggressive in the strike zone in this game. Ray pitched against the Giants just two weeks ago and put up a 10/0 K/BB rate while giving up just one earned run over 7.0 innings pitched. With the Diamondbacks huge favorites here I will turn to the run line for value and take Arizona -1.5 as another Tuesday MLB selection.
