When you are watching college football today, why not make some money on the side by backing our MLB handicapper, Mark Lathrop, as he makes his Saturday MLB Picks of the Day? He's got two selections to build your bankroll.

Cleveland Indians vs Seattle Mariners

Being close to a team has its advantages, especially in finding when to choose bad spots. Our MLB handicapper lives in the Pacific Northwest and senses a team that has given up on the season.

The Mariners were entertaining for most of the year, I’ll give them that. But injuries to their starting rotation robbed them of any chance to make the playoffs this year. They’ve lost 6 straight and are losing their 7th straight as I write this on Friday night, and all indications are they are a team playing out the stretch. They’ll start Andrew Moore in this game, a pitcher with great makeup but also with great current struggles with a 5.70 FIP. He hasn’t been able to overpower MLB hitters and has put up a 4.58 K/9 rate in his 55 innings pitched.

Starting for the Indians here is Carlos Carrasco who comes into the game with a 16-6 record. More importantly is that he carries a .225 BAA against right-handers on the year. Just like I’ve faded pitchers who struggle against righties when playing the Mariners, I must tail pitchers who are tough on them. The Indians are on a 27-1 run going into Friday night and this looks like another good spot to back them on the run line as one of my Saturday MLB Picks.

Washington Nationals vs N.Y. Mets

An ace returns for the Mets to give some hope for next year amidst their lost season. Noah Syndergaard makes his first start since April 30th for the Mets and finds himself as a huge underdog against the Washington Nationals.

The fact that Noah Syndergaard accrued 1.4 WAR in the month of April says it all to me. Before he got hurt the right-hander was carrying a 1.14 FIP and had a 10.54 K/9 rate against a 0.66 BB/9 rate. His 32/2 K/9 rate overall was incredible, especially for a pitcher that averages 99.5 mph on his fastball. But the red flags for him getting hurt were there before the season began, as Syndergaard gained 17 pounds over the winter to throw even harder in 2017. That didn’t work and he left April with a torn lat muscle.Speaking of injured stars, Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals starts against Syndergaard in this game and he’s been great since returning from the DL himself. He is carrying an 11.16 K/9, 1.98 BB/9, and 1.97 FIP over the second half of the season – not to mention a 0.72 ERA and .170 BAA. Strasburg hasn’t allowed a run in 5 of his last 8 starts and also hasn’t allowed more than 2 runs in any of those either. With both of these pitchers having great potential to throw a gem I’ll take Under 8.5 runs as another Saturday MLB selection.
