Oakland Athletics vs Seattle Mariners

A newly acquired pitcher will take the mound for the first time for Seattle on Friday night, and after a 5-game losing streak the Mariners will be looking for some home cooking to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The Mariners have gone from tied for the AL Wild Card to 4.5 games back in short order, and they need to basically seep their homes tand to get back into the mix. Losers of 5 straight, Seattle made a deal to pick up Mike Leake from the Cardinals for a mix of contract consideration and a prospect. What Leake offers the Mariners is an innings eater that has a very good history with staying healthy. Of course, that is good for the Mariners who has had their starting rotation decimated by injuries this season.

Leake comes in and almost immediately becomes the Mariners best pitcher. That is healthy. James Paxton, Felix Hernandez, Drew Smyly, and Hishashi Iwakuma were in the rotation to start the year and are out at this point. He’s had a nasty second half of the year with an unlucky .377 BABIP that has skewed his overall results. Leake’s ERA on the first half of the season was 3.12 and in the second half was 6.90. In the same time his xFIP has just increased from 3.83 to 4.42. Not as big of a jump, and I like him going against a fresh lineup of the A’s with a reasonable line of -114 on the moneyline as one of my Friday MLB Picks of the Day.

L.A. Dodgers vs San Diego Padres

Clayton Kershaw makes his return after more than a month off against the Padres on Friday night. The line is steep if you want to back him, but the total line offers some decent value as a side bet.

The Padres have had little to cheer for this year, but Dinelson Lamet is one of those things. He’s been a strikeout machine this season and has 10.99 K/9 rate on the season. Lamet has also been extremely hot of late, with an insane .147 BAA in the month of August, a 1.06 WHIP, and 3.94 FIP. His velocity has been steady as well, with a 95.3 average on his fastball in his last start. Lamet has also not allowed more than 3 earned runs in his last seven starts. He has not faced the Dodgers this year.

Lamet will go up against Clayton Kershaw, who will be on a 75-pitch or 5-inning limit for this start. Kershaw has given up only 2 earned runs in his last six starts, all of six innings or more. In fact, Kershaw has only given up more than 2 earned runs in 9 of his last 10 starts. Kershaw has faced the Padres twice this year, and has given up just 2 earned runs over 14.1 innings pitched. If Kershaw’s start goes short, he will pass it on to a bullpen that has a 2.91 ERA on the year. I like both pitchers here, given me a chance to take the Under of 7 as one of my Friday MLB selections.
